Nigerian music trade press announced Spyro as a signee of The Cake Bizness, a Lagos label built around a “startup equity” model, on 5 September 2024. Every commercial release in his catalogue checked since, ten singles and one album spanning February 2025 to August 2026, carries a different name on its copyright line: “TAP Music, under exclusive license to Cinq Music Group, LLC.” His two breakout hits from 2022 and 2023 carry a third name entirely, London’s NWS Music Group. The Cake Bizness has not appeared on a single phonogram credit this desk could find.

None of this was announced. It sits only in the (P) line, the phonogram copyright credit every streaming platform requires on every release, and surfaced only after a full pull of Spyro’s Apple Music catalogue across three storefronts, cross-checked against the trade coverage of his 2024 signing and a UK Companies House search.

What the 2024 signing actually was

The Cake Bizness was launched in March 2024 by Gilbert “A-Q” Bani, a Nigerian rapper and record executive formerly signed to Chocolate City Music and a co-founder of the label 100 Crowns. Bani described the label’s model to Music In Africa in terms borrowed from startup investing rather than traditional label economics: “Every artist in development is a startup and should be treated as such,” he said, adding that the goal was an ecosystem where “everyone gets a piece of the cake.” The framework, per that reporting, lets outside investors put early money into a signed artist’s brand and lets music-industry professionals take sweat equity in exchange for shares.

Zhus JDO was the label’s first signee in 2024. Spyro, already known for his 2022 to 2023 hit “Who Is Your Guy?”, followed as a signee announced on 5 September 2024, again in Music In Africa, again with no financial terms disclosed: no advance, no equity percentage, no royalty rate, no rights described. No document located anywhere, from either party, states what The Cake Bizness actually holds in Spyro’s catalogue, or whether it holds anything in the legal sense at all.

A UK Companies House search for “Cake Bizness” run for this record on 14 September 2026 returned no matching entity. Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission has no public search facility, and this desk did not attempt one by another route, so The Cake Bizness’s registered legal name, if it has one, could not be confirmed from any source checked.

What the credit line actually shows

Spyro’s breakout single “Who Is Your Guy?”, released 25 November 2022, carries the phonogram credit “(P) 2022 NWS Music Group,” read directly on Apple Music. Its March 2023 remix featuring Tiwa Savage carries the same credit, “(P) 2023 NWS Music Group,” confirmed directly on the Ghana storefront. NWS Music Group is a real, named company: an independent London label and publishing group founded in March 2022 by Nick Raphael, the former president of Capitol Records UK, and Christian Tattersfield, the former chief executive of Warner Music UK, according to Music Week’s report on the group’s January 2023 publishing launch. Its recordings arm, North West Sound Recordings Limited, is confirmed active on the UK Companies House register under company number 13985763, incorporated 18 March 2022, matching the trade-press founding date.

The credit line changes after that. “Beautiful,” released 14 February 2025, carries “(P) 2025 TAP Music, under exclusive license to Cinq Music Group, LLC,” read directly on Apple Music. The same formula appears on his September 2025 album “The Men, The Boys and Your Guy,” on “Shope” in December 2025, and on “God Design,” his most recent solo single, released 19 August 2026. Nine months separate that first TAP Music-credited release from the Cake Bizness announcement, and every release checked since carries TAP Music and Cinq, never Cake Bizness.

Cinq Music Group is a Los Angeles label, distributor and rights company, a subsidiary of GoDigital Media Group, already active in African music through a 2026 acquisition of D’Banj’s catalogue and a distribution partnership with Nairobi’s Soul HQ. Its role on Spyro’s credit line, as the exclusive licensee, is the clearest single fact in this record. What is not clear is what “TAP Music” refers to. The name matches TAP Music Limited, a UK company (number 07247803) founded in 2010 and best known as Ben Mawson and Ed Millett’s management and label group, whose past clients include Dua Lipa and Lana Del Rey. But TAP Music’s own documented label venture, reported by Music Week and Billboard, runs through Universal Music Group, not Cinq, and no source located ties that company to Spyro by name. UK Companies House also lists a second, similarly named entity, TAP Music Entertainment Limited, dissolved in August 2024. This record does not claim either company is the “TAP Music” on Spyro’s releases; it could not be established from any source checked, and the credit line itself carries no company suffix or registration number.

What neither side has said

No statement from Spyro, The Cake Bizness, NWS Music Group or Cinq Music Group addresses any of this directly. There is no press release describing a masters transfer out of NWS Music Group, no interview in which Spyro discusses what The Cake Bizness deal actually covers, and no clarification anywhere of which “TAP Music” sits on his current releases. The Cake Bizness’s own social output continues to reference Spyro as part of its story without ever appearing on a commercial release.

NWS Music Group’s own promotional posts also credit Spyro’s catalogue partnership alongside South Africa’s Dlala Thukzin and Nigeria’s KCee and Naira Marley. This desk verified that promotional activity but did not independently confirm formal signings for those three artists, and this record does not extend beyond Spyro’s own credit line.

What this means for artists

A label signing announced in trade press and a name on a phonogram credit answer two different questions, and this catalogue shows how far apart they can sit. The Cake Bizness’s equity pitch to Spyro, whatever it actually promised him, has not shown up on a single commercial release in the two years since it was announced. Meanwhile a London recordings company most fans have never heard of held his defining hit for its first year, and a licensing arrangement between an ambiguously named “TAP Music” and a Los Angeles distributor has held everything since, unannounced and unexplained.

For any artist weighing a label offer built around future upside, ownership language and equity promises, the practical lesson is to ask what happens on the copyright line, not just what happens on the term sheet. A company can announce a signing without ever touching the masters, and a masters holder can hold them without ever announcing anything. Get the actual rights position, in writing, before the deal is a headline, because the phonogram credit on the next release is often the only public record of who really holds what.
