Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Afrobeats Wire collects when you read the site, why, and what you can do about it. It replaces the placeholder text that shipped with the site.

Who we are

Afrobeats Wire, at afrobeatswire.com, published by Afrobeats Wire Media Ltd, a company registered in Nigeria. For anything in this policy, including a request about your own data, write to privacy@afrobeatswire.com.

What we collect

When you read a page

Our web server records the request: your IP address, the page asked for, the time, the referring page and your browser’s user agent string. This is ordinary server logging, it is how the site is kept secure and how abuse is traced, and the logs rotate away after 52 days.

Cookies

Only the essential ones are set until you say otherwise. What each one does is listed in the Cookie Policy, where you can also change your choice.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to count readers and see which stories are read. It runs only if you allow analytics cookies. Until you do, Google’s tag runs with consent mode set to denied, so no analytics or advertising storage is used and identifiers are redacted. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal we treat that as a refusal.

The newsletter

If you subscribe we store the email address you gave us, on our own server, and use it only to send you Afrobeats Wire. We do not sell it, rent it or pass it to anyone else. Unsubscribing removes you.

Images and media

Pictures and other media are delivered through Amazon CloudFront, so Amazon Web Services processes the request for those files, including your IP address, in order to serve them.

Search data

We use Google Search Console to see which search queries bring people here. That data reaches us already aggregated, and does not identify anyone.

Redirects and broken links

We log requests for pages that do not exist so that broken links can be repaired. Those records can include an IP address and are kept only while they are useful.

What we do not do

• We do not run comments. The site has no comment form and comment submissions are refused at the server.
• We do not carry advertising, and we set no advertising cookies.
• We do not sell, rent or trade personal data.
• We do not build advertising profiles of readers.
• We do not ask you to create a reader account.

Why we are allowed to hold it

• Consent, for analytics cookies and for the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time.
• Legitimate interests, for server logs and for keeping the site available and secure.

Who else sees it

Our hosting provider, which runs the server; Google, for analytics and search reporting; and Amazon Web Services, for delivering media. Each acts on our instructions for those purposes. We will also disclose data where the law requires it.

Where it goes

Those providers operate internationally, so data may be processed outside your country, including outside Nigeria and the European Economic Area. Transfers rely on the safeguards those providers offer, such as standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

• Server logs: 52 days, then they rotate away.
• Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
• Your cookie choice: for the life of that cookie, as listed in the Cookie Policy.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, and under the UK and EU GDPR where those apply to you, you can ask us to:

• tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy;
• correct it if it is wrong;
• delete it;
• restrict or stop a particular use of it;
• hand it over in a portable form;
• stop relying on your consent, without affecting what was done before you withdrew it.

Write to privacy@afrobeatswire.com. We will answer within one month. If you are not satisfied you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, or to the supervisory authority where you live.

Children

This site is written for people working in the music business and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from a child. If you believe we have, tell us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Administrative access is restricted, and the server is hardened against the common attacks on publishing software. No system is perfectly secure, but we do not collect much, which is the best protection we can offer you.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
