Unresolved origins on this desk’s own Spotify artist roster grew from 1.2 per cent of the panel to 35.5 per cent in ten days, and the growth is not artists leaving the roster, it is the resolver falling behind a roster that keeps growing. On 5 September 2026 this desk’s roster held 4,908 charting artists and could not place a country of origin for 61 of them. On 15 September 2026, before this run, the roster held 5,386 artists and 1,912 had no resolved origin. This run applied seven named corrections with published evidence and confirmed one deliberate exclusion, moving 47,188,882 combined chart streams into a resolved African-origin state and confirming a further 1,939,444 as correctly excluded. The unresolved share barely moved, from 35.5 to 35.4 per cent, because seven or eight names out of 1,912 was never going to close a gap this size.

Why the gap grew instead of shrinking#

build_roster() resolves a limited batch of new artist IDs against MusicBrainz on every refresh and writes each one straight into the roster, resolved or not. An artist whose Spotify profile carries no linked MusicBrainz identity, or whose name returns no clean match, is recorded as unresolved rather than left pending for a later attempt. As the panel’s chart collection widens and turns over which artists appear, more new IDs enter the roster every refresh than the resolver clears, and the unresolved bucket compounds. That is a capacity problem in this desk’s own pipeline, not a change in who is actually charting.

Not every unresolved artist matters to this desk’s African figures. Cross-matching the 1,904 unresolved IDs left after this run against the twenty daily chart snapshots this desk has kept, 13 August to 15 September 2026, splits them cleanly.

1,603 of the 1,904 never appeared on Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria or South Africa’s own chart in that window at all. They are irrelevant to any African total this desk publishes, whatever their true origin turns out to be. The other 301 did chart on one of those four markets at least once, which means every one of them is a candidate the resolver’s gap could be hiding, and before this run’s corrections that count was 309.

What this run found and fixed#

This desk checked the largest of those candidates by cumulative African-market chart streams against a published biographical source before touching the roster. Seven resolved cleanly.

Hamo El Morshedy alone accounts for 17,270,909 of the 47,188,882 total, all of it on Egypt’s own chart. Ramy Sabry, also Egyptian, carries 13,059,837 across Egypt and Morocco. The other five, Tamer Ashour, Angham, Bahaa Sultan, Sam Deep and Johnny Drille, are documented Egyptian, Egyptian, Egyptian, South African and Nigerian respectively and carry the remainder.

An eighth candidate inside the same 301 was checked and not reclassified.

Wael Jassar charts on Egypt’s own daily chart the same way the other seven do, carrying 1,939,444 streams there, and Wikipedia documents him as Lebanese. He stays out of every African count in this piece. The unresolved bucket does not sort itself by continent, and a chart market is a market an artist reaches, not a nationality.

The counter-reading#

47,188,882 streams sounds like a real recovery. It is a real recovery of one artist’s weight, stated seven times.

Drop Hamo El Morshedy alone and the total these seven corrections carry falls from 47,188,882 to 29,917,973, a 36.6 per cent share gone with one name. Drop the top three, Hamo El Morshedy, Ramy Sabry and Tamer Ashour, and it falls to 9,185,173. Three names, all Egyptian, are the great majority of what this run recovered. If any one of those three biographical sources is wrong, misattributed, or describes a different artist sharing a name, a mistake this desk has caught in this same roster before, the recovered total moves by tens of points, not by a rounding error, and the honest state of this fix is that it is concentrated in very few names rather than spread across the 301 candidates it was drawn from.

Two further limits. First, this run checked candidates by size, largest cumulative streams first, so it found this desk’s biggest blind spots, not a representative sample of the 301; the resolution rate among the candidates left unchecked could be higher or lower than seven-of-eight. Second, cumulative_streams_20day sums twenty daily chart snapshots into one number for convenience; it is not a daily figure, a global total, or comparable to any single day’s chart-day value this desk has published elsewhere.

What this means for artists and labels#

If a distributor, festival, or platform dashboard sorts artists by country the way this desk’s roster does, an unlinked Spotify-to-MusicBrainz identity is not a cosmetic gap. It is the same mechanism that hid 47,188,882 streams of Egyptian, Nigerian and South African chart activity from this desk’s own African totals until an editor checked eight names by hand. Linking an artist’s Spotify profile to a MusicBrainz entry with a country set is a five-minute fix any artist or manager can make without waiting on a platform, and it is the fix that would have made this run unnecessary for these seven.

For readers of this desk specifically: every African share, export, or country-concentration figure this desk has published while the unresolved share sat at 35.5 per cent of the roster is a floor, not a ceiling, on the true number. This run narrows that floor by seven names. It does not close it, and nothing this desk publishes about African chart share should be read as more precise than that until the resolver’s capacity catches up with the roster it is trying to place.
