Spotify South Africa is not an independent company. It is the South African operation of Spotify Technology S.A., the Luxembourg-incorporated, NYSE-listed streaming platform. An earlier, distinct local entity by the same name – Spotify South Africa (Pty) Ltd, registered with the CIPC as K2014092870 in 2014 – was deregistered by 2019 and has no connection to Spotify’s current South African presence.
That current presence is a physical office in Rosebank, Johannesburg, which Spotify opened in May 2026, led by Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy as managing director for sub-Saharan Africa. The company says the office is meant to help it understand local markets and deepen relationships with artists and industry partners across the continent; it hosts curated-playlist, podcast and audiobook initiatives rather than any A&R, label or distribution function. Spotify first launched in South Africa in 2018.
The office opening followed several years of rising South African royalty payouts on the platform: Spotify reported paying South African artists over R400 million in 2024 and more than R500 million in 2025, with close to three-quarters of that revenue coming from listeners outside the country.
