Universal Music Africa is the regional operation of Universal Music Group across the African continent, built not as a single head office but as a cluster of national and regional entities: Universal Music South Africa, running since 1997 out of Rosebank, Johannesburg; Universal Music West Africa (originally Universal Music Group Nigeria), set up in Victoria Island, Lagos in 2017; and Universal Music Africa proper, a Francophone, Lusophone and Hispanophone hub headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire since July 2018, covering territories including Senegal, Cameroon, Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali and Togo.
Universal Music Group owns the operation outright. UMG itself was controlled by French conglomerate Vivendi until a 2021-2023 spin-off that left it independently listed on Euronext Amsterdam. Day-to-day African leadership sits with Sipho Dlamini, CEO of Universal Music Sub-Saharan Africa & South Africa since January 2021, alongside territory heads such as Moussa Soumbounou in Abidjan and Chinedu Okeke in Lagos.
The group runs African-specific imprints rather than simply routing local signings through its global rosters: Def Jam Africa, launched in 2020 and focused on African hip-hop, Afrobeats and trap; Blue Note Records Africa; and Motown Gospel Africa. That structure, local offices with named leadership and dedicated imprints, is what distinguishes a major’s African division from a major label simply signing African artists from abroad.
