Downtown Music Publishing Africa is a music publishing administrator based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It traces back to Sheer Publishing, founded in 1996 as one of South Africa’s first independent music publishers, which built a client list across Amapiano, Afro-Jazz, Kwaito and hip-hop before being acquired by Downtown Music Holdings in 2020. It operates under its current name since a rebrand on 27 May 2025, run by Managing Director Thando Makhunga.
The company is now majority-owned by Virgin Music Group, Universal Music Group’s independent-label division, which completed a $775 million acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings on 20 February 2026. It administers publishing income across sync and licensing, production music, copyright management and neighbouring rights, and was the first African publisher to run its royalty accounting on Downtown’s Curve system.
Its roster and client relationships include Jeremy Loops, K.O, Cassper Nyovest and Kwesta, and it administers the catalogue of Nigerian artist Orezi under a five-year renewal. The company says it works across Africa and globally, with staff dedicated to specific markets including Ghana.
