Deal sheet
- Status
- Announced 10 February 2026 as a recording signing to Sony Music Africa, brokered by ERA Music Group, which states on its own site that the contract was signed in January 2026. Multiple trade outlets and Sony-adjacent coverage describe it as historic: the first Namibian recording artist on Sony's roster, and, per ERA, the first Namibian artist of any kind to sign directly to Sony Music Entertainment. The artist's own account, given to The Namibian on 16 February 2026, describes the deal in her own words: "This is not just a recording deal, which means they will be handling all the distribution of my upcoming music releases and other related projects."
No announcement, trade report or party statement names the legal entity that actually signed her. Every public account uses the marketing name "Sony Music Africa." The phonogram (℗) credit on both of her releases since the announcement, read directly from Apple's own catalogue metadata and cross-checked on Deezer, names one specific company: Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, a South African subsidiary, operating under its Sound African Recordings imprint. The credit string opens with the words "South Africa" before naming the company, the same format this desk has already documented on other artists carrying this label's credit (see the MetroBeatz RSA record). No Namibian company, and no separate pan-African Sony entity distinct from the South African, West African and East African operating subsidiaries this desk has already catalogued, appears anywhere in the public record on this deal.

- Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, Sound African Recordings, ERA Music Group
- Amount
- Not disclosed
- Rights covered
- Recording rights, on the artist's own description ("recording deal" plus "all the distribution of my upcoming music releases and other related projects"). No document specifies whether Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd owns the resulting masters outright, holds an exclusive licence to them, or merely distributes recordings mastered elsewhere: the phonogram credit line only records who claims copyright in the delivered recording, not the underlying contract mechanics. Both releases carry Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd as sole named phonogram owner, with no second company or the artist's own name alongside it, which on this desk's other South African Sony records (see the AKA/Vth Season and Sha Sha/Blaqboy Music records) is usually where a licensor partner would appear if one existed. No publishing right, mechanical right or sync right is mentioned in any source located, and this record does not cover Ms Gideon's compositions, only her recordings.
- Territory
- Announced territory: unstated. Every public announcement calls the counterparty "Sony Music Africa" without specifying a country or region. What is established from the credit line is narrower: the ℗ line on both post-signing releases opens with the words "South Africa" before naming Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, the group's South African operating subsidiary, distinct from the separately incorporated Sony Music Entertainment West Africa (Lagos) and Sony Music Entertainment East Africa entities this desk has already catalogued. No source states whether Ms Gideon's contract is limited to South Africa, covers all of Africa, or is worldwide. Both releases were live on Apple Music's US storefront and on Deezer when read on 18 September 2026.

Read this before citing: THIS IS NOT A RECORD OF A DISCLOSED CONTRACT. No party has published the agreement, and no financial term, advance, royalty rate, term length or option structure appears in any source located. "Not disclosed" is the accurate entry, not a placeholder for a figure this desk failed to find.
THE COUNTERPARTY NAME IN EVERY ANNOUNCEMENT IS A BRAND, NOT A LEGAL ENTITY. "Sony Music Africa" is the marketing name used by ERA, by Ms Gideon, and by every trade report checked. No source names Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd directly. The link between the two is established only by matching the announcement to the phonogram credit line on the two releases that followed it, which is inference from timing and metadata, not a party confirming the entity.
A PHONOGRAM LINE IS NOT A CONTRACT. It records who claims copyright in the delivered recording. It does not by itself establish whether masters were assigned outright, held under an exclusive licence, or something else, and this record does not resolve that question.
WHY THIS DEAL IS FILED AS DISTRIBUTION. The site's deal-type vocabulary requires a classification. The artist's own quote frames the arrangement around distribution ("they will be handling all the distribution of my upcoming music releases and other related projects"), which is the closest match to her actual words available. Sony's own description of the arrangement, if one exists beyond ERA's page, was not found.
ERA MUSIC GROUP'S LEGAL IDENTITY IS UNRESOLVED. This desk could not match ERA Music Group, trading as eramusic.co.uk, to a specific UK Companies House registration with confidence. The afw_company record created for this deal (ERA Music Group) leaves the legal name field unresolved rather than guessing at one of the unrelated "ERA Music" entities the register returns.
NO PRE-SONY SOLO CATALOGUE WAS FOUND ON APPLE MUSIC OR DEEZER. Secondary aggregator coverage references earlier Ms Gideon singles including "Jehova" (reported as a 2023 award winner) and describes a 2022 debut single "Pretty Vibes." Apple's own catalogue lookup for her artist ID returns only a 2022 feature credit on a Yeezir-led single (label Ynot Records) and the two 2026 Sony-credited releases; no lead-artist release predating the Sony signing was found on either service checked. This desk does not conclude such releases never existed, only that they were not found live on the two catalogues checked on 18 September 2026.
THE "FIRST NAMIBIAN ARTIST" CLAIM IS THE PARTIES' OWN AND IS NOT INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED BY THIS DESK. ERA states she is the first Namibian artist signed directly to Sony Music Entertainment; Namibian press repeats this with a caveat that an earlier Namibian singer, Lize Ehlers, had a Sony-linked digital distribution deal in 2012, which reporting treats as a different kind of arrangement. This desk has not independently audited Sony's full historical roster to confirm the claim and reports it as the parties' characterisation.
ONE AGGREGATOR SOURCE CONFLICTS ON NATIONALITY AND CAREER HISTORY AND IS NOT USED. A low-quality aggregator site found in initial research described a same-named artist as South African with a different 2025 EP and SAMA nomination. That page's details contradict every primary and trade source used in this record and appear to be unreliable, possibly machine-generated, content; nothing from it is relied on here.
Namibian singer Ms Gideon signed a recording deal with Sony in January 2026, brokered by her management company, ERA Music Group. Every announcement of it, hers included, calls the counterparty “Sony Music Africa.” Nobody named the legal entity. The phonogram credit on both of her releases since names one specific company: Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, the group’s South African subsidiary, operating under its Sound African Recordings imprint, the same corporate structure this desk has already traced on other South African Sony signings. No Namibian entity, and no pan-African Sony entity separate from its South African, West African and East African operating companies, appears anywhere in the public record on this deal.
None of that makes the deal less real, or less good for Ms Gideon. It is a normal way for a major label to run a frontier-market signing: the local operating company that already has the distribution pipes, the DSP relationships and the back-office infrastructure signs the artist, and a regional marketing team calls it “Sony Music Africa” because that is the brand a Namibian audience recognises, not because a company by that name exists.
What was announced
Music In Africa reported the signing on 10 February 2026, describing it as the first time a Namibian recording artist had joined “Sony Global Music Company’s” roster. The Namibian ran two separate pieces the same week, one confirming the debut single date and one carrying an interview in which Ms Gideon, born Panduleni Gideon, described the arrangement in her own words: “This is not just a recording deal, which means they will be handling all the distribution of my upcoming music releases and other related projects.” Trade coverage repeated the framing without adding a named Sony executive or a financial figure. No source located discloses an advance, a royalty rate, a term length or a territory.
ERA Music Group’s own site fills in how the deal came together on its side. ERA, a management and brand-consultancy company describing itself as based in London and Johannesburg, says it discovered Ms Gideon, took her to a writing camp in Johannesburg, and then “signed an artist recording deal for Ms Gideon with Sony Music Africa” in January 2026, a month before the public announcement. ERA’s own roster page also lists Nigerian-British artist BNXN and Indian playback singer Celina Sharma, so this is not a single-artist shell; it is a working management company that has placed at least one other African artist with a major label.
What the credit line actually says
Apple’s own catalogue metadata for Ms Gideon’s two releases since the signing gives the same phonogram line on both, word for word:
| Release | Date | Apple phonogram line | Deezer label field | UPC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiki Tak Tak | 27 February 2026 | ℗ 2026 South Africa - Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, under Sound African Recordings a division of Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd | Sound African Recordings | 196874099230 |
| All My Luv (feat. Not3s) | 31 July 2026 | ℗ 2026 South Africa - Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, under Sound African Recordings a division of Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd | Sound African Recordings | 196874619612 |
Both lines were read directly from Apple’s catalogue lookup API and cross-checked against Deezer’s album endpoint on 18 September 2026. Sound African Recordings is not a new label invented for this signing. It is the same South African Sony imprint this desk has already found crediting MetroBeatz RSA, and which a December 2025 industry feature describes as home to Sha Sha, Samthing Soweto, Daliwonga and Young Stunna, all South African amapiano artists. A Namibian singer’s first two major-label releases are, on the copyright line, product of the same South African commercial infrastructure built for a South African roster.
This is a single, consistent finding, not a large one. It does not mean Sony misled anyone, or that the deal is smaller than described. Regional major-label subsidiaries routinely sign artists from neighbouring markets that do not yet justify a dedicated local entity; that is precisely why Sony operates separate West African, East African and South African subsidiaries in the first place, and why an artist from a fourth market gets folded into whichever one has the infrastructure. What it does mean is that the sentence “signed to Sony Music Africa” describes a marketing umbrella, and the sentence that is actually true and checkable is “signed to Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd,” a South African company.
What ERA is, and is not
ERA Music Group’s own account of the deal uses the first person plural: “we signed.” That is standard language for a management company that negotiated a deal on an artist’s behalf, not necessarily a claim that ERA itself holds a rights interest in the recordings. No document located names ERA as a party to any rights agreement, and the phonogram credit on both releases names only the Sony entity, with no second company or the artist’s own name alongside it. On the comparable AKA and Sha Sha records this desk has already published, that second slot is where a licensor partner appears when one exists. Its absence here is consistent with ERA functioning as management and dealmaker rather than as a rights-holding party, though no source states this directly and this record does not treat the absence as proof.
No earlier catalogue to compare against
Several of the write-ups around Ms Gideon’s signing reference an earlier career: a 2022 debut single and a 2023 single that reportedly won a local song of the year award. Apple’s own catalogue lookup for her artist ID, however, returns only one pre-Sony credit: a 2022 feature on a single led by another artist, Yeezir, credited to his label, Ynot Records. No lead-artist release predating the Sony deal was found live on Apple Music or Deezer under her artist profile. That does not mean earlier releases never existed; it means there is no surviving own-catalogue credit line to compare against the Sony one, which is itself useful information for anyone trying to trace where her masters sit. This is, on the evidence available, close to a debut major-label signing rather than a catalogue that changed hands.
What this means for artists
Three things are worth taking from this if you are an African artist being told a major label wants to sign you “for the region.”
First, ask which entity actually signs the paper, not which brand does the press release. “Sony Music Africa,” “Universal Music Africa” and similar regional names are marketing constructs sitting over a set of separately incorporated national subsidiaries. The company on your contract, and on your royalty statements, will be one of those subsidiaries, and it is worth knowing in advance which one, because that determines which country’s law governs the deal and which office actually pays you.
Second, a management company’s own announcement of “we signed” is not the same as a management company being party to your rights. If your manager brokered the deal, ask explicitly, in writing, whether the management company holds any commission, co-ownership or continuing interest in the masters, distinct from a standard management commission on your earnings. ERA’s public description of its own role here reads as a discovery-and-dealmaking function; nothing found suggests otherwise, but that is a question worth having answered for your own deal, not assumed from someone else’s.
Third, if your prior releases carried a different label credit, decide before you sign whether that catalogue is included in the new deal or stays where it is. This record could not find a pre-Sony solo catalogue for Ms Gideon to test that question against, but for any artist with an existing back catalogue, the phonogram credit on old releases will not automatically update to match a new deal unless someone actively re-delivers it, and if it does not update, that is itself a signal about what was and was not included.
What is not established
No source discloses whether Ms Gideon’s masters are owned outright by Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, licensed to it, or something else; the phonogram line records a copyright claim, not a contract mechanism. No source discloses a term, an advance, a royalty rate or a territory beyond the word “Africa” used loosely by every party. ERA Music Group’s registered legal identity could not be matched with confidence to any UK Companies House filing found in a name search conducted for this record. Whether Sony’s characterisation of Ms Gideon as its first direct Namibian signing is accurate against its full historical roster has not been independently audited by this desk; it is reported here as the parties’ own claim.
