Mavin Records is a Lagos record label founded in 2012 by the producer Michael Collins Ajereh, who works as Don Jazzy, after the wind-down of Mo’ Hits Records. It signs, records and markets Nigerian pop and Afrobeats artists and runs its own A and R, production and marketing operations from Lagos. The holding company is Mavin Global.
In February 2024 Universal Music Group agreed to acquire a majority stake in Mavin Global. Don Jazzy stayed on as founder and chief executive and Tega Oghenejobo as chief operating officer. Kupanda Capital remained a minority investor and strategic adviser, and TPG exited in full. Financial terms were not disclosed. Billboard had reported the previous October that the label was being marketed by Shot Tower Capital at a valuation above 125 million dollars.
The roster has included Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Johnny Drille, Magixx, Bayanni and Boy Spyce. Mavin is the clearest single example of the pattern this directory exists to record: an African-founded independent that kept its founders in operational control while passing majority ownership to a major.
