Sound African Recordings is the South African repertoire imprint of Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd. Its own X account, joined May 2014, describes it in its bio as “Sound African Recordings - A Division of @SonyMusicAfrica.” A December 2025 trade feature on the label describes it instead as “a subsidiary of Sony Music Africa” and dates its founding to 2014. Those two descriptions are not the same corporate structure: a division is part of the parent company, a subsidiary is separately incorporated. No registry document reviewed by this desk resolves which is correct, and the imprint does not appear as a distinct registered entity in any filing located.
The imprint’s connection to the Sony entity is visible in release metadata rather than in a company filing. Sha Sha’s “Woza” (2020) carries the Apple phonogram line “℗ 2020 South Africa - Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd/Blaqboy Music Corporation (Pty) Ltd”, while Deezer’s label field for the same product reads “Sound African Recordings”. The same pairing appears on MetroBeatz RSA’s 2026 releases: Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd on the phonogram line, Sound African Recordings in the label field.
Katlego Malatji is named as Director of South African Repertoire in a December 2025 label feature, which describes him as having trained and worked as a lawyer specialising in contract negotiation, intellectual property and entertainment law before moving into music. The same feature names Sha Sha, Samthing Soweto, Daliwonga, Aymos, Young Stunna, MFR Souls and Scorpion Kings among the label’s artists.
The imprint operates no public-facing website of its own. The website recorded here is the Sony Music corporate site used by its parent group. A dedicated Sony Music Africa domain could not be resolved when checked on 11 September 2026.
