Gallo Music Publishers now administers Kingsley’s compositions. It does not own them. The Zimbabwean-born, Pretoria-based artist signed an agreement with the South African publisher on 20 February 2026, structured so that his own publishing arm, Kountry Klub Publishing, becomes “an official division of” his own label, Kountry Klub Records. No fee, commission rate or advance was disclosed by either side, and none has surfaced since.
The full deal record, with every source, is here.
What actually changed hands#
Nothing changed hands. That is the point of an administration deal, and it is the detail most coverage of artist signings glosses over. Gallo did not buy Kingsley’s songs. It was appointed to work them: registering compositions with the collecting societies that pay when a song is streamed, broadcast or performed; tracking what is owed; chasing it down; and opening doors to synchronisation placements in film, television and advertising. Kingsley’s own quote in the announcement makes the structure explicit, thanking Gallo for “services” rather than describing a sale, and Rob Cowling, Gallo’s Head of Publishing, frames the appointment the same way: relief from “the office administration required in registering songs, tracking and collecting income and navigating the various rights collection societies.”
The company that owns the songs, on the face of this announcement, is still Kingsley’s own Kountry Klub Records. Kountry Klub Publishing, the entity that actually holds the publishing side of his catalogue, is described as a division of that label, not a separate company signed away to a bigger one. Gallo sits above it as administrator, not as owner.
Why this is worth a deal record and not just a signing announcement#
Music coverage routinely uses “signed to,” “partnered with” and “joined” as if they describe one relationship. They describe several, and an artist’s leverage differs enormously between them. A masters deal can mean giving up the recordings outright. A publishing acquisition can mean giving up the songs outright. An administration deal, which is what the primary source describes here, means keeping the asset and paying someone a cut, for a defined period, to manage the paperwork that turns airplay and streams into money in your account.
For an independent artist who already runs his own label and his own publishing arm, as Kingsley does, that distinction is the entire story. He is not joining Gallo’s roster the way an unsigned songwriter might. He is hiring Gallo’s administration network while keeping his own company structure intact. It is closer to what Kobalt did for Mr Eazi’s emPawa Africa catalogue in 2020, or what Sony Music Publishing does for Gallo’s own catalogue outside Africa, than to a traditional publishing signing.
What the record could not confirm#
Three gaps are worth naming plainly, because a reader could otherwise assume more precision than the public record supports.
Money. No commission percentage, advance or minimum guarantee appears anywhere in the primary announcement or in either independent trade account checked for this piece. Publishing administrators typically take a percentage of collections, commonly in a single-digit-to-teens range depending on services and territory, but no figure specific to this deal has been published by either party.
Territory. This is the detail that separates this record from its closest comparison on this site. Sony Music Publishing’s 2021 agreement with Gallo Music Publishers explicitly reads “worldwide agreement, excluding Africa.” Nothing in the Kingsley announcement defines a territory at all. Readers should not assume worldwide, and should not assume Africa-only. It simply is not stated.
Corroboration on Gallo’s own channels. This publication checked Gallo Music Publishers’ own website directly on 30 August 2026. It carries no news item, press release or roster entry naming Kingsley, Kountry Klub Records or Kountry Klub Publishing among the pages retrieved. The deal is documented in the artist-facing entertainment press, consistently across two independent outlets in the same week, but this publication did not find it independently confirmed on the publisher’s own domain, and says so rather than assuming an oversight in indexing.
The catalogue that got Gallo’s attention#
The announcement itself supplies the commercial logic. Kingsley’s debut album, Kountry Klub King, released the previous year through Music Arena distribution partner CCA, and its lead single, “Are You That Somebody” featuring Usmokolo, generated enough streaming, radio and social activity to draw Gallo’s interest before any publishing conversation began. That is the more common route into a publishing administration deal than a cold signing: distribution and airplay generate income an artist cannot efficiently collect alone, and a publisher steps in once there is money worth chasing across multiple societies.
It is also worth noting what this deal is not, because Cowling’s own quote gestures at a separate relationship: Kingsley’s distribution has run through Music Arena partner CCA for what he describes as five years. That distribution arrangement, and Kingsley’s master recordings, sit outside this publishing agreement entirely. Nothing in the record checked for this piece establishes who owns or distributes those recordings, or on what terms.
What this means for artists#
Owning your masters and your publishing company is not the same as administering them efficiently. Kingsley’s structure, an artist-owned label with an artist-owned publishing division, is a genuinely independent setup. What this deal adds is not ownership, which he already had, but infrastructure: registration, claiming and collection across the rights societies an independent artist rarely has the staff or the relationships to work alone.
A division is not a company. Kountry Klub Publishing is described as a division of Kountry Klub Records, not a separately incorporated entity as far as any source checked establishes. That matters for anyone assessing what actually got signed: it was an administration appointment over an operating division of Kingsley’s own label, not the acquisition of a separate publishing company.
Ask what an administrator is not disclosing. Commission rate, term and territory are the three numbers that determine whether an administration deal is generous or extractive, and none of the three is public here. Any artist evaluating a similar offer should treat those as the questions to ask before signing, not after.
Distribution and publishing are separate negotiations, even when the same names keep appearing. Kingsley’s five-year distribution relationship through Music Arena’s CCA and his new publishing administration deal with Gallo, itself part of the wider Gallo Music Group, both touch the same corporate family without being the same agreement. Artists working with vertically integrated groups should confirm, in writing, which specific entity holds which specific right.
How this was verified#
Primary source: the announcement carrying attributed quotes from both Kingsley and Gallo’s Rob Cowling, published 20 February 2026, fetched and read in full, with every quotation checked against the original text. Corroboration: two independent trade accounts published the same week, one of which reproduces a Kingsley quote matching the primary source word for word. Gallo Music Publishers’ own website was checked directly and found to carry no independent record of the signing among the pages retrieved. Kountry Klub Records has not been checked against South Africa’s Companies and Intellectual Property Commission or any Zimbabwean company registry, as neither publishes a public API.
Quick answers#
Does Gallo own Kingsley’s songs?#
No. The announcement describes an administration agreement, not a sale. No party used “acquire,” “purchase” or “assign,” and no transfer of copyright is described. Kingsley’s own Kountry Klub Records is stated to retain the works.
What territory does the deal cover?#
Not stated. No document checked for this record defines a territory, worldwide or otherwise, which distinguishes it from Sony Music Publishing’s 2021 deal with the same publisher, which explicitly excludes Africa.
How much is Gallo being paid?#
Not disclosed. No commission rate, fee, advance or minimum guarantee appears in any source checked.
Does this cover Kingsley’s recordings?#
No. It covers compositions, meaning songs as written. His master recordings and his distribution arrangement through Music Arena partner CCA are separate matters not addressed by this deal.
Is Kountry Klub Publishing a separate company from Kountry Klub Records?#
Not established as one. The announcement describes it as “an official division of” Kountry Klub Records, language this record follows rather than treating as a distinct incorporated entity.
