Kobalt Music Group is a music publishing administrator and rights-management platform, founded in 2000 by Swedish entrepreneur Willard Ahdritz. Rather than owning songwriters’ copyrights, Kobalt collects and administers royalties on their behalf, and also runs a neighbouring-rights collection arm, AMRA, plus creative, sync and label-services divisions. It operates from main offices in New York and London with a roster that spans the world.
Ownership has moved twice in recent years. Ahdritz sold a majority stake to Francisco Partners in October 2022, then stepped back further when Primary Wave Music, backed by an investment from Brookfield, agreed to acquire Kobalt from Francisco Partners; that deal closed on 7 July 2026 at a price reported around USD 1.5 billion. Kobalt continues to run as a standalone operating company under chief executive Laurent Hubert, with Ahdritz having stepped down as chairman on completion.
Kobalt has no dedicated Africa office, but its African footprint is real and growing: worldwide publishing-administration joint ventures with Nigeria’s Inner Circle Publishing (signed November 2025) and Amelia Songs, with Mr Eazi’s emPawa Publishing (2020), and with London-based Heatwave Records, whose roster includes Nigerian and Ivorian artists. Kobalt has also signed Nigerian star Omah Lay directly to a worldwide publishing deal. Those partnerships place a major, well-capitalised global administrator inside the Nigerian publishing market at the same time that independents there are attracting outside investment.
