Stonebwoy Signed ‘Global’ Deals With Def Jam in 2022 and Warner’s ADA Worldwide in 2024. His Own Burniton Music Group Has Never Left the Copyright Line.

Stonebwoy has announced two “global” major-label partnerships in two years, a Def Jam Recordings and Universal Music Group signing in May 2022, then a Warner Music Group distribution deal through ADA Worldwide in April 2024, and neither one moved his copyright. Apple’s own catalogue metadata, which records the phonogram credit on every release the moment it reaches a streaming service, never once names Def Jam, UMG, ADA or Warner as the rights holder on a Stonebwoy-led recording. That line has stayed with his own Ghana-based operation throughout, shifting only between two companies he controls himself, and even that shift took more than a year to complete.

What each announcement actually said

Def Jam Africa’s own release, dated 11 May 2022 and preserved by the Wayback Machine because the label’s site does not resolve from outside a browser session, describes Stonebwoy joining Universal Music Group with Def Jam Recordings as his new label home, backed by the UK’s 0207 Def Jam and by Def Jam Africa itself. Sipho Dlamini, UMG’s chief executive for South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, Tunji Balogun, Def Jam’s chairman and chief executive since January 2022, and Alec and Alex Boateng, the co-presidents of 0207 Def Jam, are all quoted welcoming him to the roster. His lead single “Therapy” came out 3 May 2022, eight days ahead of the announcement, timed to introduce the partnership.

Two years later, on 12 April 2024, Stonebwoy signed a global distribution and label-services agreement with ADA Worldwide, the Warner Music Group division built to work with independent labels that keep their own masters. The deal ran through his own label, Burniton Music Group, not through him personally. Cat Kreidich, ADA’s president at the time, and Casey Kobia of KVO Talent, part of his management team, were both quoted on the signing. The single “Ekelebe,” featuring ODUMODUBLVCK, came out the same day.

Neither release uses the language of a masters sale. ADA’s own description of its business, distribution and services for labels that retain ownership, is consistent with what the phonogram evidence below actually shows. The Def Jam release goes further than a pure distribution deal, naming Def Jam Recordings as a “label home,” but it stops short of describing an acquisition of his existing catalogue, and no source checked for this record states that his back catalogue changed hands in 2022.

What the metadata says

Apple’s catalogue data settles the ownership question more precisely than either press release does. Pulled across Stonebwoy’s discography, from his 2012 debut album through a single released in June 2026, no release he leads carries a Def Jam, Universal Music Group, ADA Worldwide or Warner Music Group phonogram credit. The two singles issued specifically to mark each deal make the point on their own: “Therapy” carries the credit “℗ 2022 Bytetunes Music,” and “Ekelebe” carries “℗ 2024 Bytetunes Music.” Through 2023, the great majority of his own-artist releases are credited the same way, either to Bytetunes Music or to Waka Music Limited, both Ghana-based names tied to his operation rather than to either major group he had just signed with.

A handful of Stonebwoy’s guest features on other artists’ singles do carry major-label credits, including releases distributed through Universal’s operations arm and, on one 2025 single, through ADA’s French distribution business. Those are the other artist’s releases, crediting the other artist’s distributor. None of Stonebwoy’s own singles or albums, the ones his own label puts out, ever picks up a Def Jam, UMG, ADA or Warner credit.

Two names, one operation, and not a clean handover

The catalogue’s phonogram credit does move, but not on the day either major deal was announced, and not cleanly. Through 2023, Stonebwoy’s own releases carry the credit “Bytetunes Music” or “Waka Music Limited,” names that Bytetunes Music’s own social media account describes as part of the same Ghana-based label and catalogue-investment operation. Burniton Music Group, the label he founded in Accra in 2012 and the party actually named in the ADA deal, is a separate entity on paper.

A single released 1 May 2024, days before the ADA deal went public, is the first to carry a Burniton credit at all, and even then it is a joint credit, “NiiBroNii Services LLC/Burniton Music Group Limited,” not a clean switch. A single that August and an EP that September still carry the old Bytetunes Music credit alone. The catalogue does not settle into a consistent, sole Burniton Music Group credit on new releases until September 2025, seventeen months after the ADA announcement, and it stays that way on every release checked since, through a single from 17 June 2026.

No source found for this record explains why the credit moved on that particular, drawn-out timeline, or states precisely what Bytetunes Music and Waka Music Limited’s relationship to Burniton Music Group is or was, whether one operated as a local distributor for the other, a rights administrator, or something else entirely. What the metadata does establish cleanly is the part that matters for an ownership record: at every point across both deals, the credit stayed with an entity tied to Stonebwoy’s own operation, and never once became Def Jam, Universal Music Group, ADA Worldwide or Warner Music Group.

What this means for artists

A “signed to” headline is not evidence of who owns the masters, and this is a clean example of why. Two of the biggest distribution groups in recorded music both put out statements that read, at a glance, like an artist joining their roster. What both deals actually did, on the evidence available, was buy Stonebwoy global marketing weight and a distribution pipeline while his own company kept the copyright. That is a materially better outcome for an artist than a masters sale, and there is no reason to assume every “global deal” headline hides one, but the only way to know which kind of deal a given artist actually signed is to check the copyright line on the releases themselves, not the press release describing the signing.

The metadata is checkable by anyone. Every track sold through Apple Music, and equivalent data most other stores expose in some form, carries a phonogram credit naming whoever holds the recording rights. An artist, a manager or a journalist can pull that credit the same way this record did, and a credit that never changes to the name of the “partner” in a big announcement is a useful, independent check on what a deal actually was.

Two things this record cannot tell an artist reading it. First, neither Stonebwoy’s Def Jam deal nor his ADA deal disclosed a figure, a royalty rate, a revenue share or a contract term, and nothing published anywhere states what either arrangement is actually worth to him. Second, publishing rights, the copyright in his compositions rather than his recordings, are not addressed by either announcement and are not covered by this record; a “global” recording deal and a publishing deal are separate businesses, often with separate partners, and headlines that blur the two obscure more than they reveal. Worth noting, too: Cat Kreidich, quoted as ADA’s president when the Stonebwoy deal was announced, left that role in July 2025. Nothing about that change affects who owns the copyright.
