Def Jam Recordings is a hip-hop and R&B label founded in New York in 1984, now operated as a division of UMG Recordings, Inc., itself part of Universal Music Group. It handles A&R, marketing and release for its roster and runs joint ventures and imprint deals with third-party labels.
Its African footprint runs through two arrangements rather than a standalone subsidiary. In May 2020, Universal Music Group launched Def Jam Africa, a division with dedicated A&R, marketing and digital teams based in Johannesburg and Lagos that later expanded into UMG’s Abidjan, Dakar and Douala offices, reporting to the managing director of Universal Music Sub-Saharan Africa. In September 2022, Def Jam entered an exclusive worldwide joint venture with Lagos and UK-based NATIVE Records, tasked with signing and developing African talent under the NATIVE banner rather than a fixed roster.
Def Jam itself is wholly owned by Universal Music Group, the largest of the three majors. Its Africa strategy runs through partners on the ground rather than a Def Jam-branded local entity, a common structure for majors entering African markets.
