Ugandan-born artist Jon Muq and music executive Kevin Wommack have launched Shake It Africa, a record label and live entertainment company focused on creating sustainable international pathways for African artists.
The company plans to release a compilation album next February featuring collaborations between artists from Uganda, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. Its live operations will begin with a monthly residency at Pershing Hall in Austin, Texas, next month, featuring African artists and DJs. A European showcase is scheduled for March 2027 in the Netherlands.
“We’re not just releasing music. We’re creating the kind of opportunities many of us wished existed when we were starting out,” Muq said. “I know what it feels like to chase a dream without knowing if there’s room for you.”
The launch follows wider global traction for African genres such as Afrobeats and Amapiano, while infrastructure for emerging African musicians remains a developing area with a growing number of companies working to build it.
