Sony Music Publishing is the music-publishing arm of Sony Music Group, representing songwriters and composers and administering catalogues that include EMI Music Publishing. It was formed in 1995 as Sony/ATV, a joint venture between Sony and the estate of Michael Jackson built around the ATV catalogue Jackson had bought in 1985; Sony bought out the estate’s remaining 50% in 2016 and reverted the business to its original Sony Music Publishing name in 2021.
The company is wholly owned by Sony Music Group, itself a division of Sony Group Corporation, making it one of the major-owned publishers rather than an independent. Global chairman and CEO Jon Platt runs the business from New York.
In Africa, Sony Music Publishing operates a Johannesburg office and opened a dedicated Lagos office in August 2022, its first standalone West African base, under managing director Godwin Tom. The Lagos office was framed by the company as entry into a market of songwriters and composers it had until then served only from South Africa.
