Mizzou International Composers Festival 2027 Opens US Applications

Applications are open for eight Resident Composer places at the 2027 Mizzou International Composers Festival in Columbia, Missouri, United States.

The Mizzou International Composers Festival (MICF) has opened applications for eight Resident Composers to create new works for the GRAMMY Award-winning ensemble Alarm Will Sound during its 2027 edition in Columbia, Missouri, United States.

Now in its 18th year, the festival runs from 25 to 31 July 2027. Selected composers are expected to arrive in Columbia on 24 July.

Eligibility and costs

The tuition-free programme is open to composers aged 21 and above, with no upper age limit. Selected composers must be able to travel to Columbia and are responsible for their flights and most meals.

Festival programme

Concerts of contemporary music will be held at the Sinquefield Music Center and Missouri Theatre. The programme also includes a concert by guest ensemble Ensemble Dal Niente.

The closing concert will feature eight world premieres, with each Resident Composer writing a new work for Alarm Will Sound, conducted by artistic director Alan Pierson.

Selection and mentorship

Resident Composers will be selected through an online portfolio application process. During the festival, selected composers will work directly with Balch and Longstreth, including individual consultations and opportunities to engage with Alarm Will Sound during the preparation of their works.

Tuition, accommodation and ground transportation are supported by contributions from the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation. Resident Composers remain responsible for international or domestic flights to Columbia and their meals.
