PRS for Music is the operating brand of the UK performing-right collective management organisation. Its core member-owned body, Performing Right Society, Limited, was incorporated on 6 March 1914 (company number 00134396). PRS FOR MUSIC LIMITED (company number 03444246, previously Music Copyright Operational Services Limited) was incorporated on 29 September 1997. Both are registered at Goldings House, 2 Hays Lane, London SE1 2HB.
PRS for Music licenses the public performance and communication-to-the-public rights in musical works, collects licence fees from broadcasters, online services and live venues, and distributes royalties to its songwriter, composer and publisher members. It does not own master recordings and it does not act as a publisher: it administers performing rights on behalf of rightsholders.
Its African footprint rests on two separate arrangements. It has a long-standing reciprocal agreement with SAMRO covering South Africa, the only African territory listed on its own international partner societies page. In April 2023 it announced a partnership under which Orfium licenses the PRS repertoire to music users across the wider African continent.
