What the credit lines state, verbatim, is that Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd holds the recordings "under exclusive licence from" a third company. That wording places the Sony entity in the licensee position and the Devo company in the licensor position. On the face of the document Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd is not the owner of these masters; it is the exclusive licensee of them, and the counterparty granting the licence is a company associated with the artist rather than with Sony.

The licensor is named as Devo Entity Holdings (Pty) Ltd on ANOTHER DAY (2 November 2023) and on the album HEARTBREAK HOTEL (15 March 2024). From the HEARTBREAK HOTEL deluxe edition onward the licensor is named as Devo Music Group (Pty) Ltd, and that name carries through WHAT! (26 September 2025) and PRESS HASH: VOLUME ONE (21 November 2025). Neither company nor Sony has explained the change. A straightforward corporate rename does not fit the sequence, because the name "DEVO MUSIC GROUP" was already carrying the phonogram credit directly on two self-released singles in April and July 2023, before "Devo Entity Holdings (Pty) Ltd" first appeared as licensor that November. The two names overlap in time rather than succeeding one another.

The pre-signing catalogue sits outside this arrangement on its own credits. Releases from November 2021 to November 2022 carry the short-form credit "DEVO ENTITY" with no Sony involvement, and Deezer files the 2022 records under a label field reading DEVO ENTITY. Earlier still, "Sometimes" (11 November 2021) is credited to the artist personally with no company, and the 2017 to 2020 releases are credited to "Innanetwav. (UU)", a different and earlier entity. Nothing establishes whether any of that catalogue moved.

Sound African Recordings appears as the label of record on Deezer for the Sony-era products HEARTBREAK HOTEL, HEARTBREAK HOTEL: DELUXE EDITION and PRESS HASH: VOLUME ONE, and as the label in MusicBrainz label-info for the same three releases. That is the imprint name the product is marketed under, which is a distinct thing from the corporate entity named on the phonogram line.

The 2026 releases do not fit the pattern and are recorded here without interpretation. "Love Is A Star" (8 May 2026) reads "Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd / Piano Hub (Pty) Ltd", a joint credit in the slash form with no licence language and no Devo entity named. "Upside Down" (10 April 2026) reads "Jacquel Entertainment Group" with no Sony credit at all. These could indicate that the licence has lapsed, that it has been varied, that it never covered these particular products, or that the credits are simply inconsistent. None of those can be established from a credit line, and this record does not choose between them.

Territory

South Africa, on the face of the credit line only. Each Sony-era phonogram line opens with the year and then the words "South Africa" before naming Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, and that company is the Sony group's South African operating entity, distinct from Sony Music Entertainment West Africa and Sony Music Entertainment East Africa.

No contractual territory is stated by either party anywhere. The "South Africa" prefix in a phonogram line identifies the country of the copyright claim, not the scope of the licence, and no pan-African, continental or worldwide grant can be inferred from it. All releases were live in Apple Music's South African storefront when read on 25 September 2026.

Read this before citing: THIS IS NOT A RECORD OF A DISCLOSED TRANSACTION. No acquisition, master purchase or catalogue sale is claimed here and none is evidenced. What is established is narrower: trade press dated 3 November 2023 reported that the artist had signed a record deal with Sony Music Africa, and from 2 November 2023 the phonogram credit on his commercial releases names Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd as exclusive licensee of recordings licensed to it by a Devo company. Everything else here is description of metadata.

THE STRUCTURE IS PARTLY STATED, WHICH IS UNUSUAL, BUT ONLY PARTLY. Most credit lines say nothing about structure. These ones use the words "under exclusive licence from", which does identify a licence and does identify who grants it. That is the whole reason this record exists. It still does not disclose the term, the territory, the royalty rate, the advance, any option, any reversion trigger, or whether the licence covers the pre-2023 catalogue. The deal type is filed as Licensing because the document uses the word licence, not because any party has described the agreement.

NO AMOUNT EXISTS ANYWHERE. No advance, fee, royalty rate, term length or option structure appears in any source located. "Not disclosed" is the accurate entry, not a placeholder for a figure this desk failed to find. No currency is recorded for the same reason.

A PHONOGRAM LINE IS NOT A CONTRACT. A credit line records who claims copyright in the recording as delivered to a service, and here it also records how that claim is characterised. THE LICENSOR NAME CHANGES MID-CATALOGUE, UNEXPLAINED. Devo Entity Holdings (Pty) Ltd is the named licensor on the 2023 single and the March 2024 album. Devo Music Group (Pty) Ltd is the named licensor from the deluxe edition onward. Neither company nor Sony has said why. A rename is the obvious explanation and the timing does not support it cleanly, because "DEVO MUSIC GROUP" was self-crediting releases in April and July 2023, before "Devo Entity Holdings (Pty) Ltd" first appeared as licensor that November. One company renamed, two companies under common control, and two unrelated entities all remain open.

NEITHER DEVO COMPANY HAS A PUBLIC RECORD. No website, social account, filing, registration number, director list or public statement was located for either. The South African CIPC company register is not publicly searchable without an account and was not checked this session. Both company entries on this site are therefore built entirely from credit lines, and both say so.

APPLE AND DEEZER DISAGREE ON THE DELUXE EDITION RELEASE DATE. Apple dates HEARTBREAK HOTEL: DELUXE EDITION to 15 March 2024, the same day as the standard album. Deezer dates it 1 November 2024 and MusicBrainz agrees with Deezer. The two products carry different UPCs, 196871637237 and 196872558388. This matters because the deluxe edition is the first release on which the licensor name changes, so the date on which that change took effect is itself uncertain by roughly seven and a half months.

THE 2026 CREDITS DO NOT NAME THE SAME PARTIES AND COULD MEAN SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS. "Love Is A Star" of 8 May 2026 names Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd with Piano Hub (Pty) Ltd in a slash-form joint credit, with no licence wording and no Devo entity. "Upside Down" of 10 April 2026 names only Jacquel Entertainment Group, with no Sony credit at all. Lapse, variation, product-specific scope and plain metadata inconsistency are all consistent with what is visible. This desk does not pick one and does not assert that the licence has ended.

THE PRE-2023 CATALOGUE'S POSITION IS UNKNOWN. Releases credited to DEVO ENTITY (2021 to 2022), to the artist personally ("Sometimes", 2021) and to Innanetwav. (UU) (2017 to 2020) still carry those credits. Nothing establishes whether any of them moved, whether the Sony licence reaches them, or who controls them now. The artist has separately been reported elsewhere as not controlling the Innanetwav-era recordings; that report was not independently verified by this desk and is not relied on here.

OWNERSHIP OF THE MASTERS BY THE ARTIST IS NOT ASSERTED. The credit lines show that a Devo company is the licensor. They do not show who owns or controls a Devo company. It is a reasonable reading that these are the artist's own corporate vehicles, and the roster and release history point that way, but no share register, filing or statement confirms it, and this record stops short of the claim.
