An exclusive recorded-music signing of an artist to a label, covering a named single and unnamed future recordings. The announcement text issued on 30 November 2023 states that Blxckie "has been signed to; and will release his newest single 'Back Into It' along with future recorded music projects under American multinational record label Def Jam Recordings." It grants no other right on its face: it says nothing about publishing, nothing about live, nothing about merchandising, nothing about the back catalogue, and it does not describe the legal form of the arrangement.

What the documents do establish about the masters is the copyright claim. The sound recording copyright notice on every Blxckie release issued as a lead artist between 1 December 2023 and 28 March 2025 reads, in full: "℗ 2023 Def Jam Recordings, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc." and its year-updated equivalents. This desk read those notices directly from the Apple storefront catalogue on 3 September 2026, on both the South African and United States storefronts, and they cover "Back Into It" (1 December 2023), "all faxx" (12 April 2024), "pull up" (28 June 2024), the album "see u soon" and its deluxe edition (26 July 2024 and 29 November 2024), "South" (3 October 2024), "sunroof" (22 November 2024) and "ball up top" (28 March 2025). The rights registry MusicBrainz separately records "see u soon" and "see u soon (Deluxe)" with the label Def Jam Recordings. Deezer's catalogue record for "see u soon" gives the label as Def Jam Recordings and the UPC as 602468077619.

The notice names one party. It does not say "under exclusive licence from" any imprint, and it names neither M4 Entertainment nor any company of the artist's. That distinguishes it from the notices on the same artist's earlier records, which did name a licensor: "℗ 2019 Ratskcor Life under exclusive license to CCA". A notice in this form is what you would expect where the label is the copyright claimant of record, whether the masters were assigned or created under a deal in which the label is the producer. It is not consistent with the imprint-licence form visible on the artist's earlier catalogue. This desk did not obtain the agreement and makes no claim about which of those forms applies.

Those notices remain unchanged. Re-checked on 3 September 2026, the 2023 to 2025 Blxckie catalogue still carries the Def Jam Recordings notice, and the 2020 to 2023 catalogue still carries the M4 Entertainment notice.

Territory

Global, as characterised by the parties, with no expressed carve-out. The announcement and its accompanying trade coverage describe a signing to "American multinational record label Def Jam Recordings" and were headlined as a global signing. No territory schedule, no excluded territory and no term were stated in any document reached by this desk.

The counterparty is the United States label, not the African one. The copyright notice names "Def Jam Recordings, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc.", which is the United States recorded-music entity. That is a different legal person from Universal Music (Pty) Ltd South Africa, which is the claimant named on Def Jam Africa releases. The distinction is visible in this artist's own metadata: a September 2022 release on which he appears as a featured artist, SCUMIE's "Give Me Ya Luv?", carries the label credit "Def Jam Recordings, Universal Music (Pty) Ltd" and the notice "℗ 2022 Universal Music (Pty) Ltd South Africa". That is a feature credit on somebody else's record more than a year before his own signing, and it is not evidence of a Def Jam Africa deal.

The first-party artefact could not be obtained. This desk searched for a Def Jam Recordings or Universal Music Group newsroom item, checked defjam.com, checked umusic.com and universalmusic.com, and queried the Internet Archive's index for any capture of a Def Jam page for this artist. Nothing was returned. The announcement text is recorded here from a trade outlet that reproduced it in full, including the artist's direct quote, on 30 November 2023 at 15:49 South African time. Two further trade accounts published within days carry the same text. The wording used here is quoted from that reproduction, not from a document issued by Def Jam Recordings.

Publishing could not be established. The announcement is silent on the songwriting side, and this desk did not establish who publishes or administers the artist's compositions in any period. The ASCAP repertory endpoint returned HTTP 403 to this desk. BMI's Songview search requires an interactive consent step before it returns results and its terms restrict automated extraction, so it was not used. No open works search was reachable at the South African collecting society. This record therefore makes no publishing claim of any kind. A recorded-music signing does not move publishing rights, and nothing here should be read as if it did.

Africori's role is evidenced by a release page, not by an agreement. The album B4Now (Deluxe), released 13 August 2021, has its official release page hosted on africori.to, the campaign-link domain operated by Africori, which is named as the data controller on that page. This desk verified that page directly on 3 September 2026. That places Africori in the release chain as the service provider for the record, and it is a distribution and services relationship, not an ownership one. The copyright notice on B4Now names M4 Entertainment and not Africori, and MusicBrainz records the label for B4now as M4 Entertainment. No distribution agreement between Africori and M4 Entertainment or the artist was obtained, and none is asserted. Africori is now wholly owned by Warner Music Group, which is a fact about Africori and not about this artist's rights.

Who controls M4 Entertainment could not be established. An open-web mention gives a South African registration number K2016420838, incorporated 4 October 2016 in Germiston, Gauteng. This desk could not corroborate it: South Africa's Companies and Intellectual Property Commission publishes no open company-search interface reachable here, the government business portal did not respond, and the open company-data mirror returned HTTP 403. The registration number is recorded as an unverified registry mention and is not treated as a fact. No shareholder, director or officer of M4 Entertainment was established.

This desk read a strand of South African entertainment reporting published in November 2023 carrying anonymous allegations about this artist's management arrangements. It could not corroborate any of it against a document, found no response from the person named, no court record, no regulatory finding and no statement from the artist. This record therefore makes no finding on it and does not repeat it. It is noted here only so that the reader knows it was checked and set aside, not missed.

What happened after March 2025 is established by copyright notices and by the artist's own statement, not by any termination document. The last release carrying a Def Jam Recordings notice is "ball up top", 28 March 2025. From "U must neva" on 31 October 2025, the notice reads "℗ 2025 Somnyama Music Entertainment (Pty) Ltd", and it continues on the album 4LUV2 (13 February 2026) and "KARMAA" (28 March 2026). The notice on "let em have it" (24 July 2026) reads "℗ 2026 Somnyama Music Entertainment (Pty) Ltd / EMPIRE", and the official release page for that single sits on music.empi.re, EMPIRE's own campaign-link domain, verified by this desk on 3 September 2026. Trade coverage of the 4LUV2 gold certification in July 2026 carries the artist's own words: "4LUV2 Gold. independently. thank u SolDistro". Taken together that establishes that new recordings from late 2025 are claimed by a company other than Def Jam and are serviced by distributors other than Universal. It does not establish when, how or on what terms the Def Jam agreement ended, whether it was terminated or simply lapsed, or whether any option was exercised or declined. No party has issued a statement on that and none was found.

Nothing here reverts the earlier catalogues. Re-checked on 3 September 2026, the records released between October 2020 and January 2023 still carry the M4 Entertainment notice, and the records released between December 2023 and March 2025 still carry the Def Jam Recordings notice. No reversion, buy-back or assignment back to the artist is evidenced by any document reached here.

The announced date recorded here is 30 November 2023, the date the announcement was published. The first release under the deal, "Back Into It", was issued the following day, 1 December 2023. One widely circulated summary dates the signing to November 2023 and another to the fourth quarter of 2023; those are compatible and neither is a signing document.
