Read this before citing: WHAT IS ESTABLISHED
That a transaction was reported. A South African trade report dated 30 January 2016 describes a joint venture in which Universal Music holds 51 per cent of a newly formed company called Tacwise and Dangerous Combination, owned by the five Kalawa Jazmee founders, holds the remainder. That report exists, resolves, and is quoted accurately in this record. Nothing in this record asserts that the transaction it describes took place.
WHAT WAS DENIED, BY WHOM
Every named party quoted in the report denied it, on the record, in the report itself. Zynne "Mahoota" Sibika said they would never sell Kalawa Jazmee and said the parties had renewed a licensing relationship with the major, not sold the label. Oscar "Oskido" Mdlongwa dismissed the story as a rumour. Dharam Sewraj, speaking for Universal, also called it a rumour. Those denials are contemporaneous with the claim and appear in the same document, which is unusual and is treated here as material.
A separate quotation from Emmanuel "Mjokes" Matsane appears in the same report ("disagreements are a natural part of life. People are different, but there is no disagreement that is a threat to the label."). It responds to earlier reporting of tension between the co-founders. It is not a comment on any sale and must not be read as one.
WHAT IS NOT DISCLOSED
No contract, share-purchase agreement, shareholders' agreement or licence has been published by any party. No royalty rate, term, territory grant, advance, option or reversion provision appears in any source read for this record. The R50 million total and the R28 million said to reach the founders are figures attributed to a contract by a single 2016 report and are denied by the parties named in it. This desk has not seen that contract and states no deal value as fact.
WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED
The existence of Tacwise. No company register accessible to this desk holds any South African entity of that name. South Africa's Companies and Intellectual Property Commission publishes no API and no free public search reachable from here. OpenCorporates returned HTTP 403 to a South African search, and its South African dataset is in any case documented as archival only through September 2014, which predates the reported January 2016 transaction and could not have confirmed or refuted the entity even had access succeeded. A company named TACWISE GROUP PLC does appear in UK Companies House records; it manufactures fastenings and power tools, has no music activity, and is a false-positive namesake, not the entity described in the report.
The existence of Dangerous Combination as a registered company is likewise unconfirmed by any register. Its existence as a trading vehicle is separately corroborated by the label itself: Kalawa Jazmee's own about page, read 6 September 2026, states that the label operates "through Dangerous Combination Crew trading as Kalawa Jazzmee Records" and names the same five people the 2016 report named. Note the label's own page renders the label name "Kalawa Jazzmee" in that sentence, with a double z, and "Kalawa Jazmee" elsewhere on the same page.
Whether any licensing or distribution agreement between Kalawa Jazmee and any Universal entity has ever existed, is in force, or was renewed in or around 2016 could not be established. Mahoota's denial asserts a renewed licensing relationship. No licence, no announcement and no credit line corroborating one was located.
WHAT THE PLATFORM METADATA SHOWS, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT
Apple's catalogue metadata, read directly through the iTunes lookup endpoint on 6 September 2026, gives a phonographic credit naming Kalawa Jazmee alone, with no licensee and no Universal entity, on every release checked from 2010 to 2020: Professor, University Of Kalawa Jazmee (collections 1679857246, credit "℗ 2010 Kalawa Jazmee", and 1698217570, credit "℗ 2014 Kalawa Jazmee"); Mafikizolo, Reunited (1690056602, released 10 April 2013, "℗ 2013 Kalawa Jazmee"); DJ Zinhle, "Umlilo (feat. A phonogram credit states which legal person claims ownership of a sound recording. It does not state who owns that legal person. An unbroken Kalawa Jazmee credit line is therefore consistent both with the label being wholly founder-owned and with a major holding a majority of the shares in a holding company above it. It is evidence about the copyright, not about the cap table, and this record does not treat it as refuting the 2016 report. It refutes only the stronger reading of that report, that the masters themselves moved.
CORRECTION OF A CLAIM CIRCULATING IN SUMMARY FORM
Secondary web summaries encountered while researching this record assert that Apple's credit line for Kalawa Jazmee releases reads "Kalawa Jazmee under exclusive license to Universal Music South Africa" or similar. That phrasing was not found in any directly fetched source. The verified Apple copyright field on every release checked reads only "℗ [year] Kalawa Jazmee", with no licensee named. This record states that explicitly so the error is not propagated.
THE ONE PLACE UNIVERSAL DOES APPEAR
MusicBrainz holds two South African 2013 releases in the Reunited release group (a0684ed8-7043-4734-b65b-a2416fb385de). Release 267adaa2-7101-4a25-b009-fc78e325afe9 has empty label-info. Release 30c80e53-a072-4012-befc-bb8f98dc1671 carries catalogue number COREL 2694 and label "Universal", type Imprint, label code 1846. MusicBrainz's own disambiguation for that label entity reads "plain logo 'Universal' used by Universal Music and Universal Pictures", meaning it is a generic imprint marker rather than a specific record company. This is a catalogue and manufacturing credit on one edition of one album. It is not an ownership signal and is not treated as one here.
OTHER SOURCES ATTEMPTED AND NOT READ
Wikipedia's Kalawa Jazmee page returned HTTP 403 to this server. An IOL article on the label's Idols involvement returned HTTP 403. nehandaradio.com returned HTTP 429 and then a JavaScript-only shell. Spotify and YouTube pages for Kalawa Jazmee repertoire are JavaScript-rendered and expose no copyright metadata to a direct fetch. A Sowetan follow-up dated 26 April 2019, "The evolution of Kalawa Jazmee", was read in full and contains no reference to Universal, to Tacwise, or to the label's ownership structure.

This is a record of a disputed claim, published because the claim circulates and has never been resolved in public, not because this desk has established that a transaction occurred. Universal appears once in the verified metadata: MusicBrainz records a second South African 2013 edition of Reunited carrying catalogue number COREL 2694 and the imprint “Universal”, label code 1846. MusicBrainz itself disambiguates that entry as the “plain logo ‘Universal’ used by Universal Music and Universal Pictures”. That is a manufacturing and catalogue credit on one physical release. It is not evidence of equity.
