Universal Music (Pty) Ltd, trading as Universal Music South Africa (UMGSA), is the South African subsidiary of Universal Music Group. It has operated from Rosebank, Johannesburg since 1997 and is the second-largest UMG division on the African continent, sitting alongside francophone counterpart Universal Music Africa.
The company is wholly owned by Universal Music Group, a major. Its South African operation covers recorded music, music publishing through Universal Music Publishing Group’s local arm, and UMG Live Africa, a talent and booking division launched in 2017 that represents both signed and unsigned artists. Sipho Dlamini has served as managing director since March 2016.
As the major-label presence in one of the continent’s largest recorded-music markets, UMGSA’s signings and distribution deals with South African and touring African artists are a recurring reference point for how the majors structure their African operations.
