Alibaba Launches AI Music Generator Happy Shrimp in China

Alibaba has introduced Happy Shrimp, an AI music generator created with Taihe Music Group, with access starting at $9.90.

Chinese technology company Alibaba has launched Happy Shrimp, an artificial intelligence music generator that turns text prompts into fully produced songs, through a partnership with TAIHE MUSIC GROUP, a major Chinese music label and audio entertainment company.

The tool is in beta and lets users create, publish, discover, like and comment on AI-generated music. Access options include:

  • Monthly membership starting at $14.90
  • Credit packages starting at $9.90

How Happy Shrimp works

Happy Shrimp 1.0 was developed by Alibaba Token Hub, the artificial intelligence business group launched in March and overseen directly by Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu. Users can enter short or long prompts using professional music terminology or internet slang, and the site says the model can return a fully produced track in seconds.

The website describes the model as treating music as a language with its own grammar, semantics and context, planning lyrics, melody, arrangement and vocals together instead of stitching separate parts together, so the whole track comes out as one coherent piece.

Alibaba’s AI portfolio

Happy Shrimp joins Alibaba’s suite of Happy AI models, which includes Happy Horse, an AI video generation service, and Happy Oyster, which creates three-dimensional interactive video for game developers. E-commerce platforms including AliExpress and Taobao remain the core of Alibaba’s operations, while the Happy models come from Token Hub, the centralized AI research division Wu created to bring more commercial AI models to market.

“Our first and foremost goal is to pursue artificial general intelligence,” Wu said in February 2025 on an investor call. “We aim to continue to develop models that extend the boundaries of intelligence.”

AI music competition

The launch arrives as AI music platforms compete for growth and capital. U.S.-based Suno recently announced a licensing agreement with BMG, following a similar deal with Warner Music Group. Spotify has said it will begin labeling AI music in September and is rolling out an AI remix function with partners including Universal Music Group (UMG), Merlin and Kobalt.

Festival appearance

Alibaba and TAIHE are exploring additional opportunities such as artist co-creation and high-quality content development. The AI music tool also says on its website that it will be at the Aranya Xiami Music & Arts Festival on the Aranya coast in China’s northern province of Hebei on Aug. 28. Details were not disclosed. The lineup for the three-day festival includes Chinese artists Mavis Fan, Lao Lang and Chen Li, and U.S., Australian and European groups such as Tortoise, Frente! and The Cardigans.
