Over 20 collection dates between 8 October and 5 November 2026, this desk’s Spotify chart panel measured 2.9094 per cent of Burna Boy’s reported daily Spotify streams and 49.2183 per cent of Seyi Vibez’s. Same instrument, same 76 markets, same 20 days, and a gap of 46.3089 percentage points in how much of an artist’s reported listening it can see. On a second, independently built denominator the gap is 48.2758 percentage points.
The measurement is a ratio of two counts. The numerator is every daily stream figure attached to a Top 200 row where the artist is the credited lead, summed across all 76 markets Spotify publishes a daily chart for. The denominator is the same artist’s reported daily stream total for their whole catalogue, across every market and both lead and featured credits, captured on the same date. Twelve of the 50 artists on this desk’s African panel appear in both sources on all 20 dates, giving 240 artist-days.
Twelve African artists present on this desk's panel and in Spotify's all-time artist table on all 20 collection dates. The two largest catalogues sit at the bottom.

The chart ranking does not order these artists the way their listening does#
Pooled across 240 artist-days, the panel measured 128,044,009 chart streams against 832,390,000 reported daily streams, a share of 15.3827 per cent. That pooled figure is steady over time: on no single date did it fall below 14.0734 per cent or rise above 18.1787 per cent. What is not steady is which artist the share belongs to.
Burna Boy and Wizkid hold the two largest catalogues in the group, and they are the two worst-measured artists in it. Ranked by reported daily streams across the 20 dates, they are first and second of the 12. Ranked by the chart streams this desk publishes, they are eighth and ninth. The chart ranking moves each of them 7 places. Seyi Vibez and BNXN move the other way: they lead the chart-stream ranking and sit fifth and seventh on daily consumption. Across the whole group the two orderings have a Spearman rank correlation of 0.2867, with a two-tailed permutation p-value of 0.3663, which on 12 artists is not distinguishable from no relationship at all.

The denominator had to be proved rather than assumed, and the proof is partial. Spotify’s all-time artist table does not define its Daily column anywhere on the page, and it carries its own warning that the section is under construction and may contain glitches. So it was checked against a quantity the same table reports separately: the cumulative all-time stream total. Across 168 artist-day observations on the 14 pairs of consecutive calendar days this desk captured, the one-day change in that cumulative total summed to 101.29 per cent of the reported Daily figures. But that aggregate agreement conceals the mechanism. The cumulative column does not update every day for every artist: ElGrandeToto’s all-time total took only 5 distinct values across the 20 readings, and 9 of the 168 one-day differences were negative, which is impossible for a cumulative count. Day-by-day differencing therefore works only in aggregate, where the update lags cancel.

Checking it per artist needs a longer window, where a few days of lag matter less. Over the full 28 calendar days from 8 October to 5 November 2026, each artist’s cumulative total moved by between 67.33 and 114.01 per cent of what their own Daily readings say it should have, and 93.09 per cent across all 12. That is the real precision of this denominator at artist level: single digits of error for some, a third out for others, and overstated rather than understated overall.
The numerator needed no such caveat. On 5 November 2026 the panel’s own figures were recomputed from the raw 76-market snapshot, artist by artist, and all 50 rows matched on stream total, market count and track count, with no mismatches. The whole 12-artist table was then rebuilt a second time directly from the market rows, bypassing the panel entirely, and all 12 rows reproduced on numerator, denominator and share.
What would have to be true for this to be wrong#
The sharpest objection is that the spread is an artefact of the denominator. The Daily column is a reported figure, and its error is not evenly spread: across the 28-day window it overstates most for the artists measured worst, which would inflate the gap. So every share was rebuilt on a denominator that does not use the Daily column’s level at all, rescaling each artist by their own cumulative-total movement. The gap does not close. It widens, to 48.2758 percentage points, with Burna Boy at 3.2614 per cent and Seyi Vibez at 51.5372 per cent, and the pooled figure moves to 16.5249 per cent. The two worst-measured artists stay the two worst-measured artists. A uniform error in the denominator cannot touch this finding at all, because scaling every denominator by the same factor leaves every ratio between artists unchanged.

The next objection is that the panel simply misses whatever sits outside a daily Top 200, and that artists with deep back catalogues or heavy featured-credit income have more of their listening in that blind spot. That is plausible and it is not what the data shows. Capture share does fall as the all-time catalogue grows, with a Spearman rho of -0.5245, but the two-tailed permutation p-value is 0.0836. Against featured-credit share of the catalogue the rho is -0.3497 at a p-value of 0.2663. Neither clears 0.05 on 12 artists. The spread is measured precisely and it is not explained, and 12 observations are too few to call that an absence of effect rather than a failure to detect one.

| 1 | Capture share falls as the artist's all-time catalogue grows | All-time Spotify streams | -0.5245 | 0.0836 | not distinguishable from zero |
| 2 | Capture share falls as more of the catalogue is earned as a featured artist | Featured-credit share of all-time streams | -0.3497 | 0.2663 | not distinguishable from zero |
| 3 | The chart ranking orders these artists the way their actual daily consumption does | Reported daily streams against chart streams | 0.2867 | 0.3663 | not distinguishable from zero |

The pooled 15.3827 per cent is the fragile number here, and it is fragile in a direction that makes the finding worse rather than better. Because it is a ratio of two sums, removing an artist changes both sides. Removing Seyi Vibez alone takes it to 12.2212 per cent. Removing the three best-measured artists, Seyi Vibez, BNXN and Asake, takes it to 7.1673 per cent. Removing the three largest catalogues instead takes it up to 19.9028 per cent. Any single-figure summary of this panel’s coverage is a statement about which artists happen to be in it.

The per-artist distribution is skewed the same way. The unweighted mean of the 12 shares is 16.6472 per cent, higher than the pooled 15.3827 per cent, and dropping the three highest rows takes that mean to 9.2307 per cent, a fall of 44.55 per cent. Removing Burna Boy or Wizkid, the two lowest rows, moves the mean up by 7.5 and 7.29 per cent respectively. The typical artist in this group is measured considerably worse than either summary figure implies.

Four limits sit under all of this and none of them cancel. The 12 artists are not a sample of African artists; they are the artists who are simultaneously on this desk’s 50-artist panel and inside the 3,000 rows of Spotify’s all-time artist table, which selects for very large catalogues, and 10 of the 12 are Nigerian. The other 38 panel artists have no denominator at all, so nothing here describes them. The 20 dates are the dates this desk actually collected, not every calendar day in the window. And both denominators come from the same page, which warns about its own reliability: they are consistent with each other to 93.09 per cent across the group, and neither has been checked against Spotify’s own books.
What this means if you are making the music#
The first thing is a correction to how a chart position should be read as evidence. A Nigerian release that concentrates its listening inside Nigeria in its first weeks will show up in this panel at something close to half its real daily volume. A catalogue spread across dozens of markets, none of which it enters the Top 200 of, shows up at roughly a thirtieth. If you are being pitched on, or arguing from, chart-stream totals, the number is not wrong, but it is measuring a different thing for Seyi Vibez than it is for Burna Boy, and the difference is 46.3089 percentage points wide.
The second follows for anyone using chart presence as a proxy for demand when pricing or planning. On these 12 artists the chart ordering carries no detectable relationship to the consumption ordering. An artist with a large, internationally distributed catalogue and modest chart streams is not a declining artist; on this measurement they are an artist whose listening sits where a daily Top 200 cannot reach it. The practical move is to ask for catalogue-level daily figures, which exist and which an artist can pull from their own dashboard, rather than accepting a chart footprint as the whole picture.
The third is about this desk. Every figure published here off the Spotify panel, including this desk’s export share and market share series, is built on the same numerator tested above. That numerator reproduces exactly and it is not going to be withdrawn. What this piece establishes is its scale: for the 12 panel artists where an independent denominator exists, it is between 2.9094 and 49.2183 per cent of their reported daily listening, between 3.2614 and 51.5372 per cent on a second denominator, and it is not a constant fraction either way. A reader treating chart streams as consumption has been reading one number as another, and the size of that error depends on the artist.
