African Composers Edition (ACE) is a South African sheet music publisher founded in 2012 by Prof. Christine Lucia at the University of Stellenbosch. It produces critical and performing editions of African art music by Ephraim Amu, Michael Mosoeu Moerane, Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa, Surendran Reddy and Justinian Tamusuza, with English translations of indigenous-language texts, historical commentary and dual staff and tonic solfa notation. It sells digital scores in South African rand direct from its own site.
ACE states on its own About page that it “does not manage copyright, which resides in works and remains with composers” and that it “retains copyright only over its published scores”, with copyright holders receiving 50 per cent of income from sales. It is a publisher of editions rather than a rights administrator.
ACE was acquired by The Maestro Online Ltd, a UK private limited company. ACE’s own homepage structured data names “The Maestro Online Platform and Piano Improvisation Exam Board” as its parent organisation. The consideration was not disclosed.
