Who Owns C4 Pedro’s Masters? His Own Angolan Company BLS Prod, With Universal Music Portugal Credited as Distributor on 39 of 40 Releases

C4 Pedro’s masters are owned by his own Angolan company, BLS Prod. Universal Music Portugal, S.A. is named as distributor on 39 of the 40 releases he has issued under that imprint since February 2015. Sony Music Entertainment Portugal signed him to a two-year contract in Lisbon on 27 January 2016 with quotes from two named executives, and appears in his own catalogue credits exactly once, on a single released seven and a half years later.

The signing was announced. The distribution was not. That is the whole story, and it is a pattern this desk keeps finding in African catalogues: the relationship that actually moves the music is the one nobody holds a press conference for.

The documents behind this are two Angolan trade reports, Apple’s delivered rights metadata for the artist’s full catalogue, a MusicBrainz registry record, and Sony Music Portugal’s own website. The full deal record is here, with every source listed and every limit stated.

What changed hands in January 2016#

On the evidence located, nothing that shows up in a rights credit.

A two-year contract was signed at Sony Music Entertainment Portugal’s Lisbon headquarters on 27 January 2016. Paula Homem, the Portuguese company’s general director, called it a point of pride to sign “one of the biggest Angolan artists” and described it as the first of many. José Maria Barbat, Sony’s director for Portugal and Spain, was present, as was Fernando Republicano of the Angolan label LS Republicano.

What the announcement does not say is what the contract was. It is not called a masters deal. It is not called a licence. It is not called a distribution agreement, and it is not called a publishing deal. No territory is stated. No advance, no royalty rate, no option and no reversion is stated. Those are not omissions this desk can fill in, and they are not filled in anywhere else either.

Who owns the recordings#

The phonogram symbol on a release identifies the party claiming rights in the sound recording. Across C4 Pedro’s own catalogue it names one company: BLS Prod, rendered BLSPROD, BLS Produções or BLS Produtora depending on the release. That is his own Angolan production company, and the document that establishes it is his rather than a third party’s is an Angolan trade report of 25 July 2016, six months after the Sony signing, which describes “a BLS Produções, de C4 Pedro” while reporting a new artist joining the label.

Apple’s catalogue for the artist returns 68 collections. Forty of them carry a BLS Prod phonogram credit. Neither Sony nor Universal is named as phonogram owner on a single one.

Who moves it, and for how long#

Of those 40 BLS Prod collections, 39 read “distributed by Universal Music Portugal, S.A.” The run opens with the single “Estragar” on 25 February 2015, eleven months before the Sony announcement, and closes, as at a catalogue pull on 9 October 2026, with “HINO DOS 30 ANOS DE BAI” on 3 August 2026. In between sit the records the artist is actually known for: the 20-track King Ckwa of 25 September 2015, the 12-track The Gentleman of 18 October 2019, the paired Bipolar releases of 7 July 2020, and the 10-track ANCESTRALIDADE of 21 October 2025.

One release in eleven years breaks the pattern. “Agora Dança”, dated 7 July 2023, reads “℗ 2023 BLSProd, distribuido por SME Portugal, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda.” Nothing located explains it. No announcement marks a 2023 move to Sony, and none marks a move back, because the next BLS Prod release, in September 2024, is Universal again.

Distributes is not owns, and the credit says distributes#

This is worth being exact about, because the announcement cycle collapses it every time.

The credits use “distributed by” and “distribuido por”. They do not use “under exclusive licence to”, and they do not use “licensed from”. On that wording Universal Music Portugal, S.A. is evidenced as performing a distribution function on recordings someone else owns. It is not evidenced as owning them, and it is not evidenced as holding a licensed interest in them. The same applies to the Sony entity on the one release that names it.

This desk has shown the same distinction on Youssou N’Dour’s catalogue, where an arrangement described as a signing was a distribution credit that simply stopped, after which the titles reappeared under the artist’s own company. It showed up again on Stonebwoy’s two “global” major-label deals, where his own Burniton Music Group never left the copyright line, and again on Himra’s May 2026 album, where the label named in the trade announcement appears in no rights metadata at all.

A registry and a metadata feed that disagree#

MusicBrainz, an open rights registry, lists The Gentleman under the label “Sony Music”, with an Angolan release event dated 18 October 2019 and a 12-track count that matches. Apple’s delivered credit for the same release reads “℗ 2019 BLSPROD, distributed by Universal Music Portugal, S.A.” and does not mention Sony anywhere.

One of those is crowd-edited and one is the metadata the distributor itself supplied to retail. This publication treats the second as the stronger evidence, and treats the disagreement as a finding rather than a nuisance. If you have ever cited a registry label field as proof of who owns a record, this is the reason not to.

Not every major-label credit in a discography belongs to the artist#

Search C4 Pedro on any service and Sony, Universal and Virgin credits all appear. Most of them are not his. “Pai Nosso” names Dopemuzik as owner, distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Portugal. “O Lamento” names Soarito and “Accelerate” names Florito, both through Virgin Music Portugal LAS. Two versions of “Só Tu” name Riverland Records, one through SME Portugal and one through MAD Solutions LLC. Those are other people’s masters with him featured on them, and they say nothing about who distributes his own catalogue.

Sony Music Portugal’s own site, meanwhile, carries a C4 Pedro artist page at the URL slug “test-artist-copy”. Fetched on 9 October 2026 it returns a live page containing template boilerplate: no biography, no releases, no statement of any relationship past or present.

What this means for artists#

Ask what the signing actually changes, and get it in writing. Masters, publishing, distribution or public affiliation are four different things. A two-year contract with a major’s local office can be any of them, and an announcement that names none of them tells you nothing you can rely on later.

The credit line is the only public record you control. Eleven years of this artist’s commercial reality is legible for free to anyone who reads a copyright field, including anyone he negotiates with next. Keeping your own company in the owner position is the asset. He did, through a major-label signing and through eleven years of major-label distribution.

Do not take a label field as an ownership claim. A registry saying “Sony Music” and a delivered credit saying BLS Prod and Universal describe different worlds. Check what your distributor actually filed to retail under your name, on a storefront, this week.

A quiet relationship can be the real one. The arrangement that put 39 of 40 self-owned releases into the market was never announced by anybody. If you are judging a deal by how loudly it was launched, you are reading the wrong document.

What is not established#

What the 2016 Sony contract covered, because no located document says. Whether it was performed, renewed, allowed to lapse or superseded. Why the single release of 7 July 2023 alone carries a Sony distribution credit. Publishing, entirely: nothing located names the publisher or administrator of the underlying compositions in any territory.

Checked without result: any newsroom page, press release or statement from either Portuguese company naming this artist, and any corporate filing for BLS Prod, Sony Music Entertainment Portugal or Universal Music Portugal, S.A., neither the Portuguese nor the Angolan commercial register offering a public interface reachable from this desk. No comment was sought from any of the three companies or from the artist, and none should be read into their silence.
