THE 2016 SONY CONTRACT
No document found specifies whether it covered masters, distribution, licensing or publishing, and none of those words is used in the announcement. A two-year term is stated. No territory, consideration, advance, royalty rate, option or reversion is stated.

THE OWNER POSITION NEVER MOVED
C4 Pedro's own catalogue is phonogram-credited throughout to his own Angolan company, BLS Prod (BLSPROD / BLS Produções / BLS Produtora), confirmed as his own operation by a trade report dated 25 July 2016. Neither Sony nor Universal is named as phonogram owner on any release in the catalogue.

WHO DISTRIBUTES
Of 40 BLS Prod-credited collections in Apple's catalogue for this artist, fetched 9 October 2026 (68 collections in total, 28 of them other artists' releases on which he features), 39 name Universal Music Portugal, S.A. as distributor, from "Estragar" dated 25 February 2015 to "HINO DOS 30 ANOS DE BAI" dated 3 August 2026. Exactly one, "Agora Dança" dated 7 July 2023, names SME Portugal, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda. instead.

DISTRIBUTES IS NOT OWNS AND IS NOT LICENSES
The credits use "distributed by" and "distribuido por". They do not use "under exclusive licence to" or "licensed from". On that wording Universal Music Portugal, S.A. is evidenced as performing a distribution function and is not evidenced as owning or holding a licensed interest in the masters. The same is true of SME Portugal on the single release that names it.

PUBLISHING
Not established. Nothing located names the publisher or administrator of the underlying compositions in any territory or for any period.

Territory
Portugal and Angola. The Sony contract was signed at Sony Music Entertainment Portugal's Lisbon headquarters; no territory was specified in the announcement itself. BLS Prod is Angolan, registered to the artist. Universal Music Portugal, S.A. and Sony Music Entertainment Portugal, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda. are both Portuguese distribution entities, named only as distributors of releases whose phonogram owner is the Angolan company.

Read this before citing: The underlying agreements have not been seen. Nothing here should be read as a description of contract terms.

This record establishes that a two-year contract between Sony Music Entertainment Portugal and C4 Pedro was announced on 27 January 2016, and that across the eleven years spanning that announcement the delivered phonogram credit on the artist's own releases names his Angolan company as owner and Universal Music Portugal, S.A. as distributor on all but one release. It does not establish what the 2016 contract covered, because no document located says. It does not establish that the contract was performed, renewed, lapsed or superseded.

A delivered retail credit is not a title deed. It names an owner position and, where stated, a distribution function. It carries no term, no territory and no reversion, and it cannot distinguish a master assigned to a company from one that company owned from the first session.

Checked without result: any newsroom release or statement from Sony Music Entertainment Portugal or Universal Music Portugal, S.A. naming this artist; any Portuguese Registo Comercial or Angolan commercial-registry filing for any of the three named parties, neither register offering a public interface reachable from this desk. Why the single release of 7 July 2023 alone carries a Sony distribution credit is not documented anywhere located. Publishing is not established in any territory.

Sony Music Entertainment Portugal signed C4 Pedro to a two-year contract in Lisbon on 27 January 2016, with quotes from two named executives. Apple’s delivered rights metadata, pulled on 9 October 2026, names a different company as distributor on 39 of the 40 releases the Angolan singer has issued under his own imprint since February 2015: Universal Music Portugal, S.A.

No document this desk could find specifies what kind of contract was signed in 2016. It is not described anywhere as a masters deal, a licence, a distribution agreement or a publishing deal. No territory, no advance and no royalty rate were disclosed. This record exists because a prominent, quoted, two-executive signing produced almost no visible change in who actually got C4 Pedro’s music to listeners, and the company that did the distributing for eleven years never announced the relationship at all.

Who owns the masters

C4 Pedro’s own catalogue is phonogram-credited to BLS Prod, rendered BLSPROD, BLS Produções or BLS Produtora across releases, his own Angolan production company. A trade report dated 25 July 2016, six months after the Sony signing, describes “a BLS Produções, de C4 Pedro” while covering his announcement of a new signing to the label, which confirms it as the artist’s own operation rather than a third party’s. BLS Prod, not Sony and not Universal, is the party named in the owner position. Neither Sony nor Universal appears as phonogram owner anywhere in the 68 collections Apple’s catalogue returns for this artist.

Who distributed him, and since when

Of the 40 collections carrying a BLS Prod phonogram credit, 39 name Universal Music Portugal, S.A. as distributor. The run starts with “Estragar” on 25 February 2015, eleven months before Sony’s announcement, and continues essentially unbroken to “HINO DOS 30 ANOS DE BAI” on 3 August 2026, taking in the 20-track King Ckwa (25 September 2015), the 12-track The Gentleman (18 October 2019), the paired Bipolar records (7 July 2020) and the 10-track ANCESTRALIDADE (21 October 2025).

Exactly one BLS Prod release in that span carries a Sony credit instead: “Agora Dança” of 7 July 2023, reading “℗ 2023 BLSProd, distribuido por SME Portugal, Sociedade Unipessoal, Lda.” No document explains why that single, and only that single, went through Sony. No press release from either company marks a 2023 switch, and none marks a reversion, because by the next BLS Prod release, in September 2024, Universal’s name is back.

The registry and the metadata disagree

MusicBrainz, an open rights registry this desk treats as a second source and never as a primary one, lists The Gentleman under the label “Sony Music”, with an Angolan release event dated 18 October 2019 and a 12-track count. Apple’s own metadata for the same release, fetched directly, reads “℗ 2019 BLSPROD, distributed by Universal Music Portugal, S.A.” with no mention of Sony in the credit at all. That is a direct conflict between a crowd-edited registry and the metadata the distributor itself delivered to retail. This record treats the delivered metadata as the stronger evidence and reports the conflict rather than resolving it away.

Not every major-label credit in this discography is his

C4 Pedro appears as a featured guest on other artists’ singles where a Sony, Universal or Virgin credit does show up, but the phonogram owner named is someone else’s company, not his. “Pai Nosso” credits Dopemuzik, distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Portugal. “O Lamento” credits Soarito and “Accelerate” credits Florito, both through Virgin Music Portugal LAS. Two versions of “Só Tu” credit Riverland Records, one through SME Portugal and one through MAD Solutions LLC. None of those masters are his, and none of them are evidence about who distributes his own catalogue.

Sony’s own site barely acknowledges him

Sony Music Portugal’s website carries a C4 Pedro artist page at the URL slug “test-artist-copy”, an address that on its own suggests a page never finished or renamed. Fetched directly on 9 October 2026, HTTP 200, it contains template boilerplate only: no biography, no release list and no statement about any current or past relationship with the artist.

What this means for artists

A press-conference signing with named executives and on-record quotes is evidence that a meeting and a contract happened. It is not evidence of what the contract covers, and on its own it tells an artist’s fans, and sometimes the artist’s own later collaborators, nothing reliable about who gets the music onto streaming services or who the artist can expect a distribution statement from.

The durable relationship in this catalogue, the one that put 39 of 40 self-owned releases into the market across eleven years, was never announced by anyone and has to be read off delivered DSP metadata rather than off any press release. African artists weighing a signing with a major’s local office should ask, and get in writing, exactly what the signing changes: whether it is their masters, their publishing, their distribution, or simply their public affiliation. The credit line on the next single is often the only place that answer actually shows up.

What was checked and could not be established

No newsroom page, press release or statement from Sony Music Entertainment Portugal or Universal Music Portugal, S.A. about any relationship with C4 Pedro was found on either company’s own site. No Portuguese Registo Comercial or Angolan commercial-registry filing was reachable from this desk, so no corporate filing concerning BLS Prod, Sony Music Entertainment Portugal or Universal Music Portugal, S.A. was examined. The ownership and distribution findings here rest on two Angolan trade reports and on Apple’s own catalogue metadata, not on any registry document.

Why “Agora Dança” alone carries a Sony credit in 2023 is not established by any source checked. Whether the 2016 contract was renewed, allowed to lapse, or superseded is not established. Publishing is a separate chain and is not established here: nothing located names the publisher or administrator of the underlying compositions. No comment was sought from C4 Pedro, BLS Prod, Sony Music Entertainment Portugal or Universal Music Portugal, S.A., and none should be read into their silence.
