Mdundo is a free, ad-supported music streaming and download platform focused on African music, offering a website and Android app across more than a dozen sub-Saharan African markets. It was founded in Nairobi in 2013 by Danish entrepreneur Martin Møller Nielsen, who moved to Kenya to work with the venture fund 88mph, together with Kenyan recording artist Francis Amisi, who performs as Frasha.

The company is publicly traded: its holding company, Mdundo.com A/S, listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Copenhagen in September 2020, raising roughly $6.4m in an offering that was oversubscribed more than twofold. That makes it one of the few African-founded music companies to have gone public on any exchange, though the corporate structure sits in Denmark while the operating business remains run out of Nairobi. Nielsen continues as CEO.

Mdundo’s revenue model leans on partnerships with telecom operators, including MTN, to distribute music and generate income across markets such as Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. It positions itself as a legal alternative to piracy in markets where subscription streaming has been slow to take hold, and has continued to report user growth since its listing.
