Anele Zondo has released a new single, Royalty, a track the South African artist describes as a declaration of self-worth and purpose. The release follows her win for Best Hip-Hop Artist at the Basadi in Music Awards.
The award adds to a significant period for Zondo, who continues to expand her presence across South Africa’s music and entertainment landscape.
A new creative direction#
Zondo says Royalty is rooted in self-belief and in recognising the power that comes with embracing who you are. The song also introduces a different side of her sound, reflecting a willingness to explore beyond the spaces she has previously occupied.
“Royalty is more than just a song. It is a praise of self, a praise of purpose, and a declaration, a moment of recognising that I am ready to ascend and take my place on my throne,” Zondo says.
She adds that the shift is deliberate. “The sound is different from what I’ve done before, but that evolution is intentional. As a multi-hyphenate creative, I’ve never wanted to be confined to one box, one genre, one identity, or one audience. I want my art to transcend genre, race and borders,” she explains.
Heritage Month timing#
Royalty arrives during South Africa’s Heritage Month and ahead of Heritage Day. Zondo says the song’s message of identity and pride is particularly fitting, encouraging listeners to embrace where they come from while recognising the person they are becoming.
For Zondo, royalty is not about waiting for external validation. It is about recognising one’s own worth and stepping into the space she believes she is meant to occupy.
“This offering is bigger than music. It is a reflection of where I am creatively, spiritually and personally: ascending, expanding and becoming,” she says.
