Mdundo is an advertising-funded music streaming and download platform founded in Kenya in 2013 and headquartered in Nairobi. It is built around low-bandwidth downloads and telecoms partnerships rather than card subscriptions, which is how it reaches listeners in markets where card payment penetration is low. Martin Nielsen is chief executive.
The company listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Copenhagen in September 2020 after an oversubscribed pre-sale of about 6.4 million dollars. That listing makes it one of very few African music companies that files public financial reports, which is why its numbers turn up so often in coverage of African streaming economics.
Mdundo operates across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana, and has extended into Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Angola and Cameroon. It signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group in 2022. In October 2025 it replaced monthly active users with paying subscribers as its headline non-financial metric, a change worth noting when comparing its figures across years.
