- SkhandaWorld, the record label brand co-founded by South African rapper K.O (Ntokozo Mdluli) and Tsholofelo Moremedi, was announced as having "joined forces with Universal Music South Africa" on 13 November 2021, timed to the release of the 11-track compilation Welcome To The Planet the day before. No SkhandaWorld or Universal executive gave a financial figure, a royalty split or a term at announcement; the only person quoted was signed artist Ma-E. Apple's own catalogue metadata shows the phonogram credit on SkhandaWorld's own group-branded releases changing at exactly that point, from self-credited lines ("SKHANDAWORLD PTY LTD," "Skhandaworld") on 2020 and early 2021 singles to "Skhanda World / Universal Music" on Welcome To The Planet itself and on every SkhandaWorld-branded release checked since, through Isitha (May 2023) and TOO MUCH (August 2024). In February 2023 the two companies issued a joint statement that three of SkhandaWorld's four signed artists, Ma-E, JustBheki and DJ Mr X, were parting ways with the label, a departure later described in coverage of the fallout as artists leaving "the joint venture." In May 2023, K.O told ZiMoja directly: "It was a business decision. Universal Music Group finances Skhandaworld and it was a joint decision." That is the clearest public statement of the arrangement's substance from either side: not simply distribution, but financing, on K.O's own account.
Running in parallel, and never named in any of this reporting, is a second and separate rights chain. K.O's own solo recordings, not the SkhandaWorld group brand, are credited on Apple's catalogue to "South Africa – Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd, under exclusive licence from Skhanda Republic," a formula that first appears on the single No Feelings in July 2017 and continues, unbroken, through the November 2021 Universal announcement, the February 2023 roster departures, and every K.O solo release checked since, up to the forward-dated singles 20 Summers (20 March 2026) and Hotela (12 June 2026). No K.O solo release carries a Universal credit at any point, and no SkhandaWorld group release carries a Sony credit after November 2021. The two arrangements sit side by side in the same artist's catalogue without touching.

First, SkhandaWorld the label brand: its own group-branded and signed-artist releases carry a joint phonogram credit, "Skhanda World / Universal Music," from November 2021 onward, and K.O has stated directly that "Universal Music Group finances Skhandaworld." That is financing and joint-decision language. It is not sale language: no source checked states that Universal acquired SkhandaWorld outright, took an equity stake of a stated size, or acquired K.O's personal masters. Second, Skhanda Republic, the entity credited as licensor on K.O's own solo recordings: the phonogram line names Sony Music Entertainment Africa as holding an exclusive licence over those masters, which is licensee language distinct from both a sale and from the Universal arrangement. Read this before citing: This record separates two things that share a name and a founder but are not shown to be the same legal arrangement. SkhandaWorld, the label brand, entered a partnership with Universal Music South Africa announced 13 November 2021; its own group-branded releases have carried the joint phonogram credit "Skhanda World / Universal Music" since that date, and K.O told ZiMoja in May 2023 that "Universal Music Group finances Skhandaworld and it was a joint decision," language stronger than plain distribution but short of a stated acquisition, equity percentage or term. The name Skhanda Republic itself first appears in the catalogue in 2014 as the title of a K.O album credited to CashTime Life, his earlier label, which is evidence of lineage but not of current corporate structure.
Two minor variants appear in the credit data and are noted rather than treated as separate findings: "Let Me Cook" (10 May 2024) renders the licensor as "Skhanda Republic (PTY) Ltd," and "K:HOVA" (6 May 2021) misspells it "Skanda Republic." A small number of K.O feature credits on other artists' releases (BLAQ BOY MUSIC, Inkabi Records, Wreckage Productions, Aristokrat Records, Universal Music (Pty) Ltd South Africa on a 2018 feature, The Vth Season Audio on a 2013 feature) were checked and excluded from this analysis because they are credits on someone else's masters, not on K.O's own catalogue.
No newsroom statement from Universal Music Group, Universal Music South Africa or Sony Music Entertainment Africa describing either arrangement could be located; every source on the SkhandaWorld side of this record is trade press or a direct quote from K.O, and the Sony side rests entirely on phonogram credit data.
