The CCP Record Company (Pty) Ltd, trading as CCP Records, is a South African record label headquartered in Sandton, Johannesburg. It began in 1972 as a production venture by Clive Calder and Ralph Simon, doing ad hoc work for EMI South Africa and Teal Records before Calder and Simon went on to found the international company Zomba. Sources differ on the exact date EMI took ownership, with some accounts citing a 1972-73 distribution deal and others a 1978 sale.
CCP has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Universal Music Group since 2013, when UMG acquired the majority of EMI’s catalogue and operations. It is not independent. Distribution today runs through Universal Music Enterprises and Universal Music South Africa.
The label’s historical significance rests on its catalogue rather than current signings: it released Brenda Fassie’s key albums, including Memeza (1998) and Myekeleni (2002), and was home at various points to Sello “Chicco” Twala, Mara Louw, Steve Kekana, Mandoza and Ringo Madlingozi. CCP functions today primarily as a legacy catalogue imprint within UMG’s South African operation rather than an actively signing label.
