Sony Music Entertainment is the recorded music arm of Sony Group Corporation, wholly owned and run from New York. It appears in this directory for its African operating companies rather than for its global business.
Sony Music Entertainment Africa operates from Johannesburg and Cape Town under managing director Sean Watson. The company opened a Lagos office in 2016 as a bureau for West Africa, and has since worked with a West African roster that has included Davido, Wizkid, Mayorkun, Gyakie, Dice Ailes and the producer Sarz. Michael Ugwu was the first general manager for the West African region and stood down in 2019.
Sony was the last of the three majors to license Boomplay, signing in 2019 after Universal and Warner. Its African footprint is built on direct signings and regional offices rather than on acquiring local companies, which distinguishes it from Warner’s route into the same markets.
