US-Based Beatport Confirms AI Ban in Expanded Beatdapp Partnership

Beatport and Beatdapp have expanded their fraud-prevention agreement, with Beatport now applying AI-generated music identification across its catalogue.

Beatport and Beatdapp AI music identification partnership

Beatport, based in Denver, Colorado in the United States, and Beatdapp, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, have expanded a fraud-prevention agreement first signed in 2024. The electronic music platform is now applying artificial intelligence (AI)-generated music identification across its catalogue.

Expanded AI ban#

Under the updated policy, Beatport is blocking uploads of music made fully or largely with AI. Its terms state that the platform “retains the right to reject or remove any Content that it suspects may be substantially AI-generated.”

The ban is similar to one in place at Bandcamp. Beatport has said its stance on AI is likely to evolve over time.

Assistive AI tools permitted#

AI-assisted tracks “will be permitted as long as they are majority human-created,” according to Beatport. The platform’s website lists assistive AI tools it is not discouraging:

  • Mixing
  • Mastering
  • Stem separation
  • Standard audio processing

Beatport’s website states: “At this time we are not discouraging the use of assistive AI tools for mixing, mastering, stem separation, or standard audio processing, so long as we continue to see these as tools utilized to enhance human creativity.”

Industry context#

The expanded agreement comes as platforms face wider debate over AI-generated audio. Beatdapp’s Batey said in a statement: “The music industry has always embraced new technology. What’s needed now is the infrastructure to bring transparency to the age of generative AI. By combining AI Music Detection with our existing fraud detection capabilities, we’re helping Beatport strengthen the integrity of its platform while protecting human creativity and giving artists, labels, DJs, and fans confidence in the music they discover and support.”

Beatport indicated that 8% of its users are currently open to playing AI music. Deezer and Spotify have also moved toward AI tagging.
