emPawa Africa is a label-services and talent-incubation company based in Lagos, founded in November 2018 by the Nigerian artist and entrepreneur Oluwatosin Ajibade, known as Mr Eazi. It began as a programme to fund and mentor emerging African artists and grew into a distribution and services business.
The company is independent and founder-owned. It provides distribution, publishing administration, marketing and funding to independent African artists and labels, while letting them keep ownership of their rights, and runs an annual incubator that offers grants and mentorship to new acts.
It matters as one of the earliest artist-founded services companies built specifically around keeping African independents independent rather than signing them to a major.
