South African producer and DJ J-Smash has received a Gold certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) for his work on That’s Why Ko Rata (O Waka).
The track is led by PLG Chanty, with Poobington and Skyy T.53. It draws on Lekompo and Bolo House, sounds associated with South Africa’s Limpopo province, and has connected with audiences beyond the province.
Certification and credits#
J-Smash, whose real name is Phihlelo Mashia, produced the record with Maboya Thabang Alan. The single was released independently by PLG Chanty through Limp Flow, with distribution handled by The Orchard.

Born in Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, J-Smash has worked across South African hip hop and electronic music. He said the certification adds another chapter tied to the 015, a place he continues to reference with pride. He also reflected on believing in an idea before visible proof, and thanked everyone who helped carry the record.
Release and streaming#
The official music video followed on 6 February 2026, and the song was later included on PLG Chanty’s 5 Roses EP, released on 6 March.
