Nigerian singer Mayorkun has released ‘Kaluba’, a new single marking his 10th year in music and opening what he describes as a new phase in his career.
Mayorkun was discovered by fellow Nigerian artist Davido and signed to his DMW (Davido Music Worldwide) label after his breakout single ‘Eleko’ gained widespread attention in 2016 and established him as an emerging artist.
Over the past 10 years, he has become a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene, releasing a string of singles and albums while building an international audience.
New single and career reset#
‘Kaluba’, a Nigerian slang term for money, combines Afrobeat influences with upbeat production and lyrics centred on Mayorkun’s experiences and career. The song reflects on his progress over the past decade while looking towards the next stage of his career.
The release follows Mayorkun’s recent appearance alongside FOLA on Davido’s ‘B4 B4’, as he enters his 10th year in the music industry.
The milestone has also coincided with a change in his appearance. Mayorkun has cut his trademark dreadlocks and introduced a new hairstyle, presenting the change as part of a broader personal and creative reset.
From ‘Eleko’ to ‘Kaluba’#
Since his 2016 debut, Mayorkun has released music that has contributed to the development of contemporary Nigerian pop and Afrobeats, while maintaining a connection with his audience.
