Nicki Minaj’s former law firm has asked a Los Angeles County court to award it $295,605 in unpaid legal fees, a filing made in the United States on the same day the rapper appeared at a polling station in New Hampshire.
Renewed request for default judgment#
The firm, Gordon Recs Scully Mansukhani, filed its renewed request within minutes of Minaj’s public appearance on Tuesday. It states that the “Starships” rapper breached their legal agreement and owes $295,605 for services, fees and interest.
The firm said its lawsuit seeking the money, filed in March, “has not been responded to in any way by [the rapper].” Thirty days have passed since she was served, so the firm is again requesting the $295,605 as a default award. A hearing on the request is set for Nov. 16.
Representatives for Minaj did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Background of the copyright case#
The firm represented Minaj in a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging that her song “I Lied” directly copied the instrumentation and beat of “onmysleeve,” a song by Julius Johnson. That case ended with a private settlement and was dismissed.
Campaign appearances#
- Minaj appeared outside a polling station in Derry, New Hampshire, accompanied by police.
- She posed for a photo in front of a campaign sign for Anthony DiLorenzo, a Trump-endorsed Republican businessman who lost his bid for Congress to Democrat Stefany Shaheen.
- The previous week, she appeared with Trump at a rally in Michigan, where she led the crowd in a chant of “We love Trump.”
At the Michigan rally, she told the crowd, “We don’t want our children to be bombarded with sex changes, right?” She then offered to support Trump if he sought a third term.
Trump also commented on her appearance. “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before: Nicki Minaj! That’s hard to miss,” he said.
