London Records, a United Kingdom label, has enlisted Glitterbox resident DJ Sophie Lloyd to rework four deep cuts from its catalogue for a project called London Revisited, with no anniversary or box-set hook attached.
Lloyd selected B-sides and rarities rather than hits. The four-track EP reworks:
- East 17: ‘It’s Alright’
- Carmel: ‘More! More! More!’
- Maria Rowe: ‘Sexual’
- Carlton: ‘Do You Dream’
The approaches range from a re-sung gospel-house version featuring Sarah Ikumu on vocals to a light-touch update built on the original drum stems.
Nick Fagg of London Records said the aim was to ‘shine a light on artists who didn’t get the attention they deserved’, including soul recordings from a label better known for pop and dance.
Project scope#
The project has no milestone trigger, the tracks are deep cuts rather than hits, and a single curator works across several artists. London Records is also using the release to reframe its own history, pointing to its soul releases as well as its pop and dance legacy.
Wider catalogue activity#
India’s Saregama this month issued an open call for emerging artists to rework, remix or sample songs from its retro Bollywood catalogue, with revenue-share release deals for the submissions it selects. Both London Records and Saregama are treating older recordings as a starting point for new music, not as material to repackage.
