Nigerian singer Kunmie has released “5AM,” a new single featuring rapper Phyno. The track examines a romantic relationship strained by miscommunication, where deep attachment coexists with conflict and uncertainty.
Across the song, the narrator expresses a willingness to provide, protect, and spend on his partner despite their recurring arguments. The lyrics describe a couple caught between love and frustration, with late-night tensions taking centre stage. In the opening lines, the narrator asks, “Where you dey go? It’s 5 in the morning,” and later says, “One thing I’m certain you know imma buy you a Birkin, yeah.”
Phyno’s verse shifts between English and Igbo as he grapples with mixed signals and fading certainty. He pleads for clarity while acknowledging the toll the relationship is taking, delivering the lines, “I tell you say na me you belong to,” and later, “Cause when I call, ina cut my call.”
A post-chorus of layered vocals repeats the phrase “Se mi ba kan ba kan,” reinforcing the song’s mood of longing and unresolved tension.
