Record and distribute a single from Lagos in 2026 at the cheapest package this desk could find and price it out, and it costs 59 dollars: 49 for two hours of studio time, basic mixing and mastering, and 10 for a flat-fee distribution plan with no revenue cut. Getting that 59 dollars back from Spotify takes anywhere from 78,667 streams to 385,621 streams, a 4.9-times range that has nothing to do with the studio and everything to do with whether a label and manager sit between the artist and the platform.

The four payout paths come from one worked example a Pulse Nigeria investigation traced through Ycee’s deal with Tinny Entertainment: on a telco-bundled platform like MTN Music Plus, a label and manager between the artist and the money leave the artist 5.1% of gross; the same platform, artist paid direct with no label, leaves 20%. On an app-based platform such as Boomplay, the label-and-manager path leaves 7.5%, the direct path 25%. Carried through Duetti’s reported 2024 Spotify rate of 3 dollars per 1,000 streams, that is 15.3 cents reaching the artist per 1,000 streams in the worst case and 75 cents in the best, a spread this desk has written up before on its own terms. What had not been done was pricing an actual production cost against it.

Freaksonar, the one Lagos studio this desk could get a full, current package list from, prices six tiers from 49 to 199 dollars. Its cheapest package buys two hours of recording plus a basic mix and master and expects the artist to bring an instrumental; its most expensive, at 199 dollars, adds beat making, six hours of recording, manual pitch correction and Dolby Atmos mixing. Crossing all six tiers with the same four cascade scenarios and the same 10-dollar RouteNote distribution fee produces 24 break-even figures, from 78,667 streams at the cheapest studio tier and the best-case direct-to-app path, to 1,366,013 streams at the priciest tier and the worst-case telco-bundled-through-a-label path. That is a 17.4-times range. The registered robustness check on those 24 figures shows the mean, 442,712 streams, drops by only 9.1% if the single most expensive combination is excluded, and by 21.6% if the three most expensive are excluded; no single row is carrying the finding.

Split the 17.4-times range into its two moving parts and the label question does more work than the studio choice. Holding the studio tier fixed at the cheapest package, moving from the best-case payout path to the worst multiplies the break-even point by 4.9. Holding the payout path fixed at the worst case, moving from the cheapest studio tier to the most expensive multiplies it by 3.5. An artist choosing a pricier studio package roughly triples what they need to earn back; an artist who goes through a label and manager on a telco-bundled platform instead of straight to an app-based one, roughly quintuples it, on top of that.

None of this prices a full release. It leaves out video, promotion, playlist pitching and cover art, none of which this desk could source to a page it could actually read rather than a search engine’s summary of one. It also leaves out mastering revision fees past the free allowance, a premium microphone upgrade Freaksonar also offers, and any free-tier distribution option, all of which would raise the true cost. And it rests on one studio’s price list, one distributor’s flat-fee plan, and cascade percentages from one artist’s deal reported by Pulse Nigeria in 2017 and republished in 2024, not a survey of Nigerian deals generally, so the true figure for any one artist could sit well outside this range in either direction. What the numbers do establish, holding everything else fixed, is that the deal structure moves the break-even point further than the studio bill does.
