Disney+ secures global Formula E streaming rights, South Africa

Disney+ has acquired global streaming rights to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship this week, and South Africa will be among the markets where races are available from the 2026/27 season. The platform will be the streaming home for the championship in most international markets.

The announcement initially said the races would stream on Disney+ in “most international markets beginning with the 2026/27 season.” Disney South Africa has since confirmed that viewers in the country will have access to the coverage.

“As we enter the GEN4 era, this provides an exceptional platform to accelerate our global growth and continue building one of the world’s most exciting sports properties. We’re also excited by the opportunity to explore additional ways for Formula E and Disney to work together beyond live race coverage, creating even more innovative and engaging experiences for fans in the years ahead,” said Jeff Dodds, Formula E CEO.

Subscription pricing in South Africa

Viewers in South Africa will need a Disney+ subscription. After Disney’s latest price increase in June, the available plans are:

• Premium monthly: 180 South African rand (R180)
• Premium annual: R1,590
• Basic: R50 per month, with resolution capped at 720p, including on larger screens

Season schedule

The 2026/27 Formula E season begins on 18 December, spanning 21 rounds across 13 events, and ends on 25 July 2027 in Tokyo. The current season ends on 16 August, before the new Disney+ arrangement takes effect.
