The Sociedade Guineense de Autores (SGA) is Guinea-Bissau’s first collective copyright management society, founded on 13–14 February 1996. It represents authors across all categories of creative work, with a board elected every four years by its general assembly.
SGA holds roughly 30 reciprocal representation agreements with sister societies abroad, including Portugal’s SPA, France’s SACEM/SDRM, Spain’s SGAE, the US Artists Rights Society and Brazil’s authors’ society. Domestically, Bissau-Guinean musicians have long described the society as under-resourced, with little state administrative support and, at times, negligible payouts to affiliated artists, though periods of mechanical-royalty collection have occurred.
