Scatterlings Pty Ltd is the phonographic copyright owner for Johnny Clegg’s recorded catalogue with Juluka and Savuka. Its name appears as the (P) credit line on South African-recorded releases from Juluka’s Universal Men (1979) through to the 2018 compilation New Earth – Rare Tracks, covering the Zulu-English crossover sound Clegg and Sipho Mchunu built at a time when it was effectively unprofitable under apartheid-era radio censorship.
The company runs scatterlings.com.au, which it describes as “the home of Johnny Clegg’s music with Juluka and Savuka,” and takes master and publishing enquiries directly through that site. Beyond the copyright credit and the site itself, this desk could not establish who currently owns or directs the company, nor confirm a jurisdiction of incorporation: South Africa’s CIPC has no public search facility, and no UK or Australian register match was found despite the .com.au domain.
It matters as the rights administrator for one of South Africa’s best-known catalogues of the apartheid and post-apartheid eras, the one that produced “Scatterlings of Africa” and “Impi,” and as the live point of contact for anyone licensing that music today.
