MCSN (Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria) is Nigeria’s collective management organisation for musical works and sound recordings, approved by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to license music users and collect and distribute royalties nationwide. It was incorporated in 1984 as the successor-in-title to the Performing and Mechanical Rights Society of Nigeria (PMRSN), which had previously handled the roles now split between performing rights and mechanical rights societies elsewhere.
The society’s services run both directions: for music creators, it handles membership, work registration, usage reporting and royalty requests, and for music users, it issues licences, sets tariffs and tracks usage logs. MCSN reports more than 38,000 members, over 450,000 songs tracked, and more than 1.082 billion naira paid out in royalties, along with over 2,500 licences issued since 2022.
MCSN describes itself as the only collective management organisation approved by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to perform this role, making it the primary channel through which Nigerian songwriters, composers and publishers collect royalties for the public use of their work.
