MPASA (the Music Publishers’ Association of South Africa) is the trade association representing music publishers in South Africa. It exists to represent publishers’ and signed songwriters’ interests to government, the wider industry and the media, and to provide members with workshops, networking and sync-licensing opportunities such as its MPASA Sync Exchange event.
The organisation traces back to the National Organisation for Reproduction Rights in Music in Southern Africa (NORM). It took its current name and narrowed its focus to publishing advocacy after the Composers Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO) was established in 2014 to take over mechanical rights administration. MPASA is a non-profit, member-governed body and is a member of the International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP).
MPASA is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. As the dedicated voice for the publishing side of the South African music business, it works alongside collecting societies such as SAMRO and CAPASSO in the country’s rights infrastructure.
