Gallo Music Investments (GMI) is the holding company for the Gallo music business, South Africa’s oldest record label, trading as Gallo Record Company and Gallo Music Publishers. In its own 6 March 2020 JSE announcement, then-parent Tiso Blackstar Group SE described GMI’s business as covering the acquisition and exploitation of music rights, artist representation, and recording, manufacturing and distribution of recorded music in South Africa and internationally.
GMI was sold, along with sister company Indigenous Film Distribution, by Blackstar Holdings Group (a Tiso Blackstar subsidiary) to Arena Holdings for a combined ZAR 75 million on 6 March 2020, of which ZAR 65 million was allocated to GMI. Trade reporting names Lebashe Investment Group, which wholly owns Arena Holdings, as the ultimate buyer. Producer and DJ Black Coffee (Nkosinathi Maphumulo) later acquired what was announced only as a “significant” stake in GMI through his company FlightMode Digital, announced 21 May 2020, with no percentage or price disclosed.
GMI is majority-owned by Arena Holdings/Lebashe Investment Group, with a minority stake held by Black Coffee’s FlightMode Digital.
