Family Tree Records is a South African hip-hop, rap and trap label founded in Johannesburg in 2014 by the rapper Cassper Nyovest, who is also its CEO. It has released his own catalogue, including Tsholofelo (2014), Refiloe (2015), Thuto (2017), Sweet and Short (2018), Any Minute Now (2020) and Solomon (2023).
The label is independent and owned by Nyovest. Universal Music Group South Africa and Family Tree announced a partnership in November 2018, which Nyovest described as covering the label as a whole rather than just his own records; UMG South Africa handles distribution. Available reporting points to a label and distribution arrangement rather than a sale of equity, and no filing showing a change of control was located.
Signed acts have included Nadia Nakai from 2016 to 2021, Tshego from 2016 to 2019 and Gemini Major from 2016 to 2020, none of whom remain. Tshego won a court case against Nyovest and the label in December 2020 over unpaid use of his music. Family Tree has no working website: the domain familytreeworld.co.za no longer resolves, and its public presence is a social account under the same name.
