Bureau Beninois du Droit d’Auteur et des Droits Voisins (BUBEDRA) is Benin’s national copyright office, created on 1 January 1984 under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts. It is the sole body authorised to manage copyright and neighbouring rights on behalf of Beninese authors, performers and producers, and to collect and distribute the royalties owed for the public use of their work.
BUBEDRA is a public administrative body rather than a private company, funded through the royalties it collects from broadcasters, concert organisers, hotels, bars and other users of protected works. It runs PGeReB, an online platform for royalty billing, user registration and payment, aimed at digitising collection across its Cotonou headquarters and the wider Beninese market.
It matters to Beninese musicians as the only legal channel for domestic royalty collection, though, as with several West African collecting societies, enforcement and payout consistency remain ongoing concerns covered periodically by the local press.
