- ORANGE BURKINA FASO AND BBDA SIGNED A NEW CONVENTION ON 5 DECEMBER 2025 ADDING A 10% ARTIST REVENUE SHARE TO ALLÔ MUZIK, BURKINA FASO'S RINGBACK-TONE SERVICE. THE SAME REPORT CARRYING THAT HEADLINE QUOTES BBDA'S OWN DIRECTOR GENERAL DESCRIBING THE MONEY AS SOMETHING "REDISTRIBUTED TO ARTISTS," THE VERB A COLLECTING SOCIETY USES FOR ITS OWN GENERAL PAYOUT ROUND, NOT THE SINGLE DIRECT PAYMENT TO "THE ARTIST WHOSE SONG IS SELECTED" THAT THE SAME ARTICLE'S OWN TEXT DESCRIBES.
Orange Burkina Faso, the Burkinabè mobile operator, and the Bureau Burkinabè du Droit d'Auteur (BBDA), the country's copyright collecting society, signed a new convention at Orange Digital Center in Ouagadougou on Friday 5 December 2025. It was signed in the presence of Orange Burkina Faso's director general, Nafy Coulibaly Silué, and BBDA's director general, Dr Hamed dit Patindeba Patric Léga; Orange's marketing and communications director, Assimi Diero, also spoke at the signing and is quoted in coverage. The convention is dedicated specifically to Allô Muzik (also spelled Allô Musik in some coverage), Orange's paid ringback-tone product, which lets a caller hear a song chosen by the subscriber instead of a standard ring tone.
Two independent Burkinabè outlets, Burkina24 and Wakat Séra, covered the signing the same week and agree on the date, the venue, the two director generals' names and titles, and the central figure: Orange Burkina Faso will pay 10% tied to Allô Muzik to artists, on top of an annual flat fee ("forfait annuel") it already pays BBDA for blanket use of the repertoire. Neither outlet discloses the value of that pre-existing flat fee, Allô Muzik's subscriber count, or its total revenue, so no document read for this record allows the 10% to be converted into a franc figure.
THE CONTRADICTION: WHO ACTUALLY RECEIVES THE MONEY, AND HOW. Burkina24's own article text states the 10% is paid "directement à l'artiste dont la chanson est sélectionnée" (directly to the artist whose song is selected), describing a single named beneficiary per tone. In the same article, BBDA's director general Léga is quoted describing the mechanism differently: "Un pourcentage sera redistribué aux artistes pour l'exploitation de leurs œuvres" (a percentage will be redistributed to the artists for the exploitation of their works), using "redistributed," the term BBDA uses for its own periodic collective payout to its full membership, not for a single direct payment bypassing the society. Wakat Séra's coverage leans toward the collective reading: Léga is quoted calling the deal relief for Burkinabè "acteurs du monde culturel" (cultural-sector actors) broadly, not for one selected artist. No source reconciles whether Orange pays the specific artist behind each selected tone directly, or pays BBDA a 10% sum that BBDA then redistributes through its ordinary membership-wide distribution round.
A SECOND, SMALLER DISCREPANCY: THE REVENUE BASE. Both outlets' headlines describe the 10% as a share of Allô Muzik's "revenus" (revenue) in general terms. Both outlets' body text narrows this to "frais de souscription" or "chaque abonnement" (subscription fees / each subscription), which is a more specific and smaller base than total service revenue would be. This desk could not locate the signed convention's text to resolve which wording is contractually accurate.
WHAT THIS RECORD DOES NOT ESTABLISH. No source gives a duration, renewal term, or effective date beyond the 5 December 2025 signing; no source states whether the 10% is paid under BBDA's authors'-rights mandate specifically, or also covers the neighbouring rights of performers and producers that BBDA's own public materials say it administers; and no source gives any monetary figure for either the pre-existing flat fee or the new 10% share. This desk checked Orange Burkina Faso's own consumer page for Allô Muzik and BBDA's own website (bbda.bf, including its news page) directly; neither mentions this convention, so this record rests on trade-press coverage of the signing, not a statement published by either named party itself.

- Amount
- Not applicable (no amount disclosed) Not disclosed. No source checked gives Allô Muzik's total revenue, subscriber count, or the value of the prior flat annual fee Orange Burkina Faso already pays BBDA, so the money value of the new 10% commitment cannot be calculated from any document this desk read.
- Rights covered
- A REVENUE-SHARE COMMITMENT LAYERED ON AN EXISTING BLANKET LICENCE, NOT AN OWNERSHIP OR PUBLISHING TRANSFER. BBDA is Burkina Faso's copyright collecting society; it does not own, and this record does not claim it owns, any composition used on Allô Muzik. Orange Burkina Faso does not acquire any ownership or exclusive right under this convention; it already held a usage right under its pre-existing flat annual fee to BBDA, and this convention adds a specific, percentage-based remuneration commitment tied to one product's subscription income. No master recording or composition changes hands, and no exclusivity is granted or removed. Coverage uses the general term "artistes" throughout without specifying whether the 10% is paid under BBDA's core authors'-rights (droit d'auteur) mandate, which covers songwriters and composers, or also reaches the neighbouring rights of performers and producers that BBDA's own public materials describe it as administering; no source distinguishes between these categories.

- Burkina24, "Orange Burkina Faso s'engage à reverser 10% des revenus de Allô Musik aux artistes : Un partenariat renforcé avec le BBDA," published 8 December 2025, naming signatories Nafy Coulibaly Silué (Orange Burkina Faso) and Dr Hamed dit Patindeba Patric Léga (BBDA), quoting both Léga and Orange's Assimi Diero, and stating the 10% is paid directly to the artist whose song is selected. Fetched and read in full. · Wakat Séra, published 16 December 2025, independently confirming the 5 December 2025 signing at Ouagadougou, the two director generals' names and titles, and the 10% figure, describing the base as "frais de souscription" (subscription fees) in its body text while its headline uses "revenus générés" (revenue generated); quotes Léga calling the deal relief for Burkinabè cultural-sector actors generally. Fetched and read in full. · BBDA's own website, checked directly for a statement on this convention. Fetched live (HTTP 200) via WordPress's HTTP API; no mention of the 5 December 2025 Orange agreement found on the homepage. · BBDA's own news page, checked directly. Fetched live (HTTP 200); no item on the Orange convention found as of this record's publication. · Orange Burkina Faso's own consumer page describing the Allô Muzik ringback-tone product. Fetched live; describes the product (choice of tone, subscription by SMS to 3505) but makes no mention of BBDA, copyright, or any artist revenue share.
Read this before citing: This record relies entirely on trade-press coverage of a public signing ceremony because neither named party has published its own statement, press release, or the convention's text at any URL this desk could locate; both Orange Burkina Faso's own Allô Muzik page and BBDA's own website and news page were checked directly and neither mentions the agreement. Two specific points are reported as unresolved contradictions, not smoothed over. First, the single outlet that supplies the most detail, Burkina24, describes the money as paid "directly to the artist whose song is selected" in its own reporting, then quotes BBDA's director general in the same article using the word "redistributed," the term a collecting society uses for its own periodic payout to its full membership, not for a side payment that bypasses it; Wakat Séra's framing (relief for cultural-sector actors broadly) leans toward the collective reading. Second, both outlets' headlines describe the 10% as a share of Allô Muzik's general revenue, while both outlets' own body text narrows this to subscription fees specifically, a materially different and smaller base; the signed convention's text was not located to settle which is correct. No source gives any franc figure for either the pre-existing flat annual fee or the new 10% share, a duration or renewal term for the new convention, or a start date beyond the 5 December 2025 signing.
