Deal sheet
- Status
- Partially established. Both signings are confirmed by Mavin's own newsroom. The identity of the legal entity credited on the resulting masters, MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, is independently confirmed via UK Companies House filings this desk read directly, but neither artist's actual contracting party, nor the reason for three deviating catalogue credits, could be established from any document checked.

Read this before citing: Methodology: sound-recording credits were read from the 'label' field returned by the Deezer public catalogue API for every album and single listed under each artist's Deezer ID, fetched directly on 27 and 28 October 2026. Apple Music/iTunes was checked as a possible cross-check and returned no usable matching results for either artist, so Deezer is the sole DSP source for the catalogue-credit claims in this record, which is disclosed rather than hidden. MusicBrainz has zero coverage of either artist. This record does not claim to know which legal entity either artist's recording contract names as counterparty, only which entity is credited on the resulting DSP metadata. It does not allege wrongdoing by Mavin, Universal Music Group, or either artist. The ownership chain from MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited up through Mavin Global Holdings Limited to UMG SPV Holdings Limited and Universal Music Group N.V. was independently established by this desk from UK Companies House filings and Mavin Global Holdings' group accounts to 31 December 2024 in earlier research, and the Companies House record was re-fetched live for this piece and confirmed still Active. Nigeria has no public company-search API, so MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited's own Nigerian registration could not be independently cross-checked beyond what its UK parent discloses.
On 14 November 2025, Mavin Global announced it had signed a 21 year old singer from Port Harcourt called CupidSZN, releasing his debut EP the same day. Thirteen days later, on 27 or 28 November depending on the outlet, it announced a second signing, a fuji and apala influenced artist called Lovn, alongside his first single as a Mavin act. Neither announcement names the company that now appears as sound recording rights holder on nearly every release either artist has put out since. That company is MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, the Lagos operating subsidiary that Universal Music Group has controlled, through an intermediate UK holding company, since May 2024.
What the two announcements actually say
Mavin’s own newsroom carries both unveilings, and both are thin on corporate detail by design: this is an artist launch, not a contract filing. The CupidSZN post states that “Mavin Global, Africa’s leading entertainment company, announces the signing of new singer-songwriter CupidSzn,” paired with his EP “Myth-Era.” The Lovn post opens “Mavin Global unveils new artist Lovn,” alongside his single “Sorry I’m Busy,” and calls him a product of the in-house Mavin Academy. Neither page mentions Universal Music Group, Mavin Global Holdings Limited, or MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited. Neither states a contract term, an advance, a royalty split, or which company the artist actually signed with. Mavin’s own site resolves its footer copyright to “Mavin Global Holdings” and routes some outbound links to umusic.com, but the body text of either unveiling explains none of it.
That is not unusual, and it is not, on its own, evidence of anything hidden. Artist unveilings are marketing, not disclosure documents. The reason it matters here is that this desk has already read the paperwork behind the brand. Mavin Records, the public-facing company (afw_company #44), carries this ownership chain on the record: Don Jazzy sold a majority stake to Universal Music Group in an agreement announced February 2024, and UK Companies House filings, read directly and re-checked again for this piece, show the holding entity Mavin Global Holdings Limited (company number 11517267) became wholly owned by UMG SPV Holdings Limited with effect from 31 May 2024, with Universal Music Group N.V. as ultimate controlling party. That holding company’s sole subsidiary is MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, the Lagos company that actually produces and exploits the sound recordings. None of that appears in either artist’s unveiling post.
What the catalogue shows
DSP catalogue metadata carries a sound recording credit independent of what any press release says, in the “label” field returned by Deezer’s public catalogue API for each release. That field is not a legal register of ownership, but it is the data DSPs actually hold against a recording, and it is what this desk checked directly, release by release, for both artists’ full discographies, fetched on 27 and 28 October 2026.
CupidSZN has released seven records since his 14 November 2025 signing: the EP “Myth-Era” and the singles “Super,” “Amuni,” “Palava (DJ Mix),” “darkest secrets / CHAKAM,” and two versions of “Hashtag.” Six of the seven carry the label credit “MG ENTERTAINMENT NIG LTD.” Before the signing, his catalogue, running from January 2024, carried his own name or a one-off collaborator credit, several through the aggregator ONErpm (“CupidSZN / ONErpm,” “Wademix / ONErpm”), consistent with an independent artist distributing himself before a label signing.
Lovn has released eight records since his signing: “Sorry I’m Busy,” “Do Not Disturb (DND),” “Omo Ti O Common,” “Available,” “Signs,” “Omo Ti O Common II,” “Do or Die,” and the album “Soundbender.” Six of the eight carry “MG ENTERTAINMENT NIG LTD.” His pre-signing history runs longer and through more names than CupidSZN’s: “Livespot Entertainment” credited his earliest tracked releases in 2022, then his catalogue moved through self-credits (“Lovn,” “Loven Tribe,” after the fashion label he also runs) before landing, by June 2025, on “2785019 Records DK,” a name in the exact numeric format DistroKid auto-generates for an artist with no label entered, meaning he was self-distributing through that aggregator in the months immediately before Mavin signed him. The MG Entertainment credit appears for the first time on “Sorry I’m Busy,” released the same day as the signing announcement.
Combined, twelve of the fifteen releases either artist has put out since their Mavin signing carry a credit, MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, that appears in no public statement either party has made about either deal. That credit is the one this desk can independently trace to Universal Music Group’s ownership chain, through a Companies House filing rather than through anything Mavin or UMG has said.
The three releases that do not fit the pattern
Three releases in the combined fifteen break from MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, and none of the three is explained anywhere this desk checked.
CupidSZN’s single “darkest secrets / CHAKAM,” released 29 May 2026 in the middle of an otherwise unbroken run of MG Entertainment credits, carries the label “The Zone Agency” instead. Lovn’s single “Signs,” released 3 July 2026, carries “Mavin Global Holdings Ltd,” the UK parent company, rather than its Nigerian operating subsidiary, the first and only time that specific name appears on either artist’s catalogue. His track “Do or Die,” a collaboration with Kpee, Morrelo and Bensh47 released 7 August 2026, carries a third name again, “Timibeat studios,” which does not match any entity in this desk’s existing company records and was not independently verified.
This piece does not resolve why. It is possible each is a routine metadata error of the kind that occurs constantly in DSP catalogue ingestion, a producer credit entered where a label name belongs, or a single piece of paper processed by a different internal team. It is also possible each reflects something real about how that specific release was structured, a feature placement, a licensed beat, a different internal entity used for a different release type. Both artists’ own labels gave no comment because none was sought for a story built entirely from public documents; nothing in this record should be read as alleging wrongdoing by Mavin, UMG, or either artist.
What this record does not establish
It is not established which legal entity either artist actually signed a contract with. The sound recording credit on a release is evidence of who DSPs record as rights holder, not a copy of the contract itself, and no contract for either signing has been made public.
It is not established whether either deal includes a publishing or songwriting component. Neither announcement mentions publishing, and no source for either artist’s publishing arrangement was found.
It is not established what, if anything, “The Zone Agency,” the UK parent-company credit on “Signs,” or “Timibeat studios” actually mean for the recordings they are attached to. It is not established whether CupidSZN’s or Lovn’s deal terms, advance, royalty rate, or contract length were ever disclosed anywhere, because they were not: neither Mavin nor either artist has stated a figure, and none is recorded here.
Nigeria has no public company-search API, so MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited’s own registration could not be independently checked beyond what UK Companies House discloses about its UK parent and what this desk previously confirmed from Mavin Global Holdings’ group accounts to 31 December 2024.
What this means for artists
Three things follow for anyone being signed, or being told they are being signed, to a label with an international parent.
First, the brand name on your Instagram unveiling and the legal entity on your contract are not reliably the same thing, and the gap between them is exactly where the money flows. A “Mavin Records” signing is, for CupidSZN and Lovn, overwhelmingly turning up on DSPs as MG Entertainment Nigeria Limited, a company whose sole shareholder answers, two steps up, to Universal Music Group. That is not a scandal. It is how a major-owned label structures its paperwork everywhere in the world. But an artist who assumes “Mavin” is a wholly independent Nigerian company because that is the brand on the poster is working from an incomplete picture of who they actually signed with.
Second, ask for the name on the contract, not the name on the announcement, before you sign anything. If a label’s public identity and its registered corporate identity diverge, as they do here, the registered name is the one that will appear in any dispute, any royalty audit, or any future sale of the catalogue you are part of.
Third, watch your own catalogue credits over time, the way this desk watched CupidSZN’s and Lovn’s. A credit that changes mid-catalogue, as happened three times across fifteen releases here, is worth a direct question to your label the day you notice it, not a year later when it has become historical and unexplainable.
